Anyone help? I am trying to run windows update but it keeps telling me that the BITS service and the Event log services need to be automatic and started, they are!!!!!! I have rebooted etc a number of time but to no avail. Any ideas?

The OS is XP Home (uck!) and its v5 of windows update

    Can you post the
    %systemroot%\windowsupdate.log
    and also the
    %windir%\SoftwareDistribution\reportingevents.log
    file as well?

You might have to zip them up to compress them...

Nuttzz, there is nothing out of the ordinary in the logs...

Can you try this and see if it changes any of the behaviour...

    1. Go to http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=b93356b1-ba43-480f-983d-eb19368f9047&DisplayLang=en and reinstall BITS 2.0

    2. Check the site again and see if it works OK.

    3. If it fails, can you check if the BITS service is enabled and started?

    Failing a success,

    4. can you net stop wuauserv
    5 Rename the %windir%\softwaredistribution folder to .\softwaredistribution1
    6. Perform a net start wuauserv
    7. Try the site again!

    Cheers,

    Colm.
