Mozilla and porn dialler

I just got hit with a porn dialler. Ironic considering the dicussion on the Ireland Offline forum, but a tad worrying considering I am using Mozilla.

Up until 30 mins ago, I was stupidly clicking on links in the vain belief that Mozilla could protect me from anything (I'm using 0.9.3 - upgrading as we speak). What scares me is that the two files downloaded without asking me (but didn't run, thankfully) and that my virus checker only caught them when I did a manual scan.

How the hell did they do that? Is this a known problem with Mozilla or a "feature"?

I've had a couple of Trojans pop in while using firefox. I can only guess that some sites are embedding their viruses and malware inside page controls and/or image content.

If you want protection from everything, unplug your computer from the Internet. As Mozilla and it's clones gain market share, do you honestly think the Bad Guys are just going to keep hacking away at IE, on the off chance?

Anyway, what were the two files? First thing you should do is try and gather as much information as you can about the attack and search Bugzilla for similar-sounding issues. If you find one, add your information to the bug, otherwise start a new one.

FYI, Firefox has a "Software Update" feature now, you might want to consider switching.

You using a firewall? They might not be getting in through Mozilla.

Yeah, I'm using a firewall, both the crappy Windows one and a hardware one in my router.

The two executables got downloaded to My Documents, but didn't get executed. This is why I think they did in fact get through via Mozilla.
