    Hehe, cool thread smile.gif

BTW, in response to El_Pres' statement earlier on that people should be allowed to raise their kids however they see fit....

You're right, and you're wrong. You're right, because I can't see any better way of organising society. You're wrong, because I think that for parents to impose their belief systems on children like that is plain WRONG. Parents like that often produce dysfunctional children, with hangups and general personality problems which can make them very deeply unhappy in later life. To my mind, this is cruelty on the part of the parents.

What about parents who believe in the whole "back to the soil and nature" ethic (the mormons or whatnot)? Do they have a right to prevent their children from socialising or growing up normally, or leading life like other kids?

Or, what about parents who are strongly against homosexuals? What if one of their kids is gay... Do they have the right to hammer it into the kid that this is wrong?

Parenting is a tricky subject indeed... and there are a lot of people out there becoming parents, who shouldn't be let within 100 yards of ANYONE's kids, never mind their own.

    Ja,
    Rob

hmm, that whole 'bring up your children' business is a pretty dod*** area.
there are 2 modes that people bring their children up to belive in....
one is a moral code. or spiritual. or whatever. ie, the ability to tell what is right and what is wrong
two. the socal mode. what society deems to be an acceptable form of upbringing.

both depend on location and circumstances
and the same way of upbringing may be good in one area, but be damned as unacceptable in others.

jesusm could you imagine an athiest anarchist commune? do you think murder would be banned there as unsociable. if it was best for the society, alla mad max for extreme example, would it be deemed bad. maybe, but it would also be deemed a neccessary act for the upkeep of their way.

of course, in a cultured society such as ours there is no end to the ways that you can corrupt people.
    thank god

Never mind the 'back to the soil and nature' bollo<ks, if yer a male Mormon you get to shag four women at once. Top notch smile.gif In all seriousness tho, I have a book which is the diary of a Mormon wife, and life is hell for women in some of these Mormon gaffs.

It's the Amish who go for that soil & nature thing, damn this evil electricity etc. etc. That's up to them of course.

and btw, women are also badly mistreated in the Hare Krishna's, who everyone thinks is dead nice and cool etc. Seperated from the men, made to do all the menial chores, treated like $hit.

Actually can anyone name me a religion that doesn't subjugate women?

Freakism Castor. It's a unique religion started soley to cash in on that post of yours. So ladies...little or no commitment....no makeovers to hide scars of subjugation.....no need for clothes or worldly posessions....and constant relations with the heavenly host ....the Freak. Voting Freakism is a vote for you. (due to space restrictions on the island of BrutheR and the fact there are already enough men making up this ideal community i request the enrolement of women only for training and thereby enlightenment).

    Woah!
I'm away for a week and I come back to this!
Okay, I have to say, I should have qualified 'christians' with 'fundamentalist', but then the joke wouldn't have been as funny. If I had to define my belief system, I would propbably consider myself somewhat christian. And if I can't joke about myself.... As for if it had been jews, well that is a whole other can of worms. But you're probably right - I'd more than likely get banned from the boards.
