For those who like buying books just thought I'd ask where do you find the best place to buy.

Reason I ask is I used to always get from Amazon, books always seemed the cheapest there but nowadays the delivery charge seems to be really high so its back to the good ole bookstore for me.

So lets here it, best value place to buy? So far I reckon its waterstones, they have a decent selection for 3 for price of two.

waterstones are good when they have offers on, otherwise Read's on Nassau St have most books cheaper but selection isnt fantastic

Amazon personally, as I'd have to go to Dublin to get any kind of decent selection. When there I've bought in the Waterstones in the Jervis centre which I thought was pretty good, and Hodges Figges on Dawson st, though I'd mostly be buying technical books there. I really like the quiet atmosphere in the latter, though the deliberate absence of chairs in both is a pain in the legs.

A lot depends on what type of book you are looking for - if its popularity/price then the 3 for two seems a pretty good option and the range seems to be expanding all the time.

Going beyond price and popularity dont forget Hodges Figgis and then there is the shop that specialises in mostly American Crime books further up in Dawson Street. HMV (belive it or not!) often have good reductions in book prices in the basement in Grafton Street and to a lesser degree in Henry St.

Theres a nice new bookshop besides the Gallery of Photography in Temple Bar and they have a loyaly card thing for every tenner you spend they even offer free coffee.

Hodges Figgis have already started their annual loyalty card scheme and surely Read's could do something about the permanent chaos in the shop. I hate to see books thrown around so much even if they are selling Patricia Cornwall's latest for about 5 euro less than anywhere else:)

Anyone know of any online book shops that offer free delivery, like play.com do for games and dvd's or has amazon put those guys outta business a long time ago?

Unfortunatly I'm unaware of any decent online book shops excluding amazon and BOL, but the dublin bookshop on grafton street is good on price for newer books. selection obviously isn't as good as hodges or waterstones though.

Have you tried buying 2nd hand through Amazon? it's usually quite a bit cheaper and the books are often untouched.

Not necessarily the greatest selection in some categories, but there's a shop called Chapters on Middle Abbey Street which has excellent value on lots of books. (May be a bulk buy thing on their part.) Enjoyable to browse in anyway and you'll usually find a bargain or five.

I didn't think amazon.co.uk shipped 2nd hand stuff to Ireland?
    Am i wrong?

It's not Amazon that ships it - it's the seller themself but they get payed through Amazon and you can complain to Amazon if anything goes wrong.

Some sellers won't send stuff to ireland but others will.

Ebay - unless the books are brand new you can usually get them for a couple of pound.Used to buy loads there until they opened a brand new library near me.
