It's probably all a publicity stunt. I'd say they were ready to roll it out ages ago, but this way they're guaranteed subscribers, who will be lured by the prospect of something "exclusive" and "privileged". Already other companies are doing 1GB email space, WITHOUT scary google tactics, in fact, aventure mail do TWO GIGABYTES of storage, for free, with no scary privacy infringements.
