You're a President?

Instead of a presidential election why don't we have a version of 'You're a Star' to find our new head of state? We could hold heats all around the country and select presidential hopefuls from ordinary members of the public, who have a desire to spend seven years up in the Park, living in a swanky house and making an occasional state visit. Candidates would be picked by a team of 'experts' (maybe ex-presidents?) and the public could get a chance to vote for their favourite candidate by telephone poll. The revenue this would generate could go some way towards paying the outrageous expenses of this largely ceremonial office and we would end up getting a president that the whole country would support. Not to mention, it would also save us listening to the likes of Dana whinging on the radio ad nauseum.

What do you think, are we on to something, or should I get me coat?

Best idea for selecting the President of Ireland that Ive heard yet. Id prefer some party piece like singing or dancing to replace the traditional "So can you speak Irish?" section of our presidential debates. More immediateldy useful for one thing.
