I was in the GMB yesterday and was reading their magazine in it they claim to be getting, amung others, the following guests:-

    Senator John McCain
    Pamela Anderson
    Bob Geldof
    Ron Jeremy
    Bertie Ahern
    John Cleese
    Justin Timberlake

Now if I recall corretly the highest profile person last year was some guy from Dawson's Creek, Why the sudden increase in high profile names?

Now that i have had time to think about it I think that they're being truthful or at least a little optimistic. Also If i recall they had Bono in last year too and i supoose he's pretty famous. I'll see if i can get more info tomorrow.

You're completely and utterly confused. The Hist got Joshua Jackson in last year. The Phil got Salman Rushdie in, whom Bono accompanied, which you have to admit is at least as impressive if not more so than John McCain. They also had in FW deClerk (former South African president). The Hist had Bertie Ahern in. Thus I don't really see why they wouldn't get all of those people on the list to speak, except maybe JT but you never know.

    Et voila..... no leg pulling.

I would've loved to go to the salman rushdie one actually - pity i only heard about it at the last minute :/

Thank for clearing that up for me, I do remeber all that actually when you remind me. I think what seems different this year is not the fame factor because as you say most of the people last year were famous this year it's a different type of famous if that makes any sense this year seems to be pop star type famous.

Every year the list is half a wish list, half serious. There's no reason not to think Bertie might pop in and the papers reported the Ron Jeremy booking. John Cleese probably costs too much - he's the highest paid speaker in Britain apparently, although a trip to Trinity might remind him of his Collegiate beginnings. Bob Gelfof would be a definite runner, but Justin Timberlake seems a bit out there, much like Pamela Anderson. And then John McCain - maybe in the new year, assuming he's in the area for something else - which is usually how these things come about. Personally, I'd love to hear him.

...and when they grow up, they all want to be PD's. Pity them.

Shh... PD's are cool. They wanna get rid of pub/club closing-time restrictions, increase education funding and tackle the car insurance problem. I'm not excessively political by anymeans but they got my vote..

Hrmmm does that not sound like some idealistic politics tripe to anyone else?

Translated into normal speak, yes we have fuk all male voters between the ages of 18 - 26 and there is their wishlist on a platter.

Ok well at least their education banter is sound.. They are the ones who we have to thank when it comes us not havin to pay fees or our reg fee being €500 euro more than it is.. They took their time granted but they got up an opposed big-bro FF when Noel Dempsey was about to implement that. Their stance on education is very very clear. That's why FF kept one of their TD's as minister of ed, cos its one of the areas where the coalition's view differs so much.

"...and when they grow up, they all want to be PD's. Pity them."

What halluginogens are you on, and can I please have some?

The President of the Phil is a manic left conspiracy theorist who has more Chomsky books than most of us have pubic hairs. He's so far from being a PD it's funny. Last year's President was a Fine Gaeler, former Labour. Of the people on Council this year, the only political affiliation of any of them is either Sinn Fein or Labour. I can't think of anyone in the society who's a PD, and I'm on first name terms with every one of them. All I can imagine is that once again, someone has confused the Hist (slightly dreary) with the Phil (the greatest and oldest society in all existence, bar the almighty DURNS). There are PDs in DebatingBoreSoc, but none that I know of in the almighty Oldest Undergraduate Society On Earth.

    Not partisan at all...
