i have an old trashed mountain bike i use which i want to paint.

the bike itself is mosdtly grand and it works and gets me from a to b.

problem is the frame is a horrible red colour with the occassional rust patch and i want to paint it a nicer colour....what type of paint should i use and where can i get it?

do i have to sand the frame before the new coat of paint goes on?

    thanks.

Atlantic Homecare do a line of spray paint in a can by a company called Metalkote and it is the best I've ever used. Its a bit pricey but gives a very good durable finish.

You should sand it lightly with 300-600 grit paper or get a Scotchbrite pad from a hardware shop. Remove loose rust. Strip/mask the bike, clean any oil off the bits you want to paint with white sprit, spray two coats of primer (€7.50/can) and two coats of whatever colour you choose (€9/can) one can of each will do the trick - try and leave the bike indoors for a day before and after you paint it to get a top quality finish and resist the temptation to take off the masking before the paint is dry - you will stick to it!!

Good luck - stick a pic of the finished job up here!!

I re-did one bike with charcoal grey Hammerite, not necessarily aero-dynamic or pretty, but no more wear and tear. :D

what about an aluminium frame with most of the paint off (600 series alloy 6061 i think)

Chrome the entire frame, that would look neat  No stickers at all, just a nice shiny frame. You'd probably have to bring it to a specialist to do that though. Feel free to correct me if I am wrong!
