An article in the Business Section of to-day's Irish Times confirms what we already know, Ireland is near the bottom of the League in terms of BB Penetration. This is based on research done by the European Competitive Telecoms Association. The article includes a leagure table which shows Country BB lines, % of Phone Lines with BB, Growth 1st to 2nd Qtr, BB lines unbundled.

    The figures for Ireland are

    63610, 3.25%, 39%, 2%

Overall it makes dismal reading, and puts the spin from Eircom into perspective.

Attached is a scan of the table from the article

And what will eircom turn around and say?

"We have the third highest growth rate for broadband in Europe"

It's a bit like starting on the back row at a Formula 1 race.

You may have overtaken more cars during the race than Schumacher but you sure as hell weren't anywhere close to beating him :)

I was nice to someone today. In terms of growth, that's a 100% increase on the previous day!

So in eircom-speak what you're saying is that we're well ahead of the growth curve given our late start? :p

Not that I believe any of this myself, just don't be suprised when you start seeing them use these figures in this way. They can be made to support their previous arguments with a bit of twisting and shoving. What we need to do is have some nice counter points ready ;)

Did anybody notice how Jamie Smyth made a pigs ear of his porn dialler article in the Business section on Friday.......starting by not checking the cost of calling Diego Garcia and not doing some ultra simple math on the minutes figures he stated .

(Hint, its €3.60 a minute to call Diego Garcia at all times and has been all year . )

It looked suspiciously like he was taking his information a la spoon from Dave Mc Redmond but it was a shockingly bad piece of 'investigative reporting' .

I would not expect his analysis of the BB figures to be any different.

He'd want to watch himself. Jamie's steadfastly avoided editorialising so this kind of reporting is his bread and butter. If he starts pushing garbage in he'll find himself leaving the prized kingdom of Irish Tech Journalists With Clue, which has got to be down to single figures by now...

Don't worry folks, Adam was illustrating a point. Rest assured no one was actually involved in being "niced" by Adam and no animals or children were hurt in this illustration. Normal service will reurn on the Dahamsta channel momentarily :p
