I'd switch to Sky+ with a mirrow sub for the second TV, solves all your issues except utv/c4. Recording, live pause etc. really excellent features which I think have to be experienced before you really appreciate just how useful they are. However it is expensive.

aye ..sky plus would be pricey, [would love it naturally] but i could record many choices with the old fashion video number set up//
no live pause granted but i could live with that ..

If you lived in Chorus land - that's argument enough for staying with or joining up to SKY.

    NTL is better afaik though.

I'll second (or is it third?) a vote for Sky+.
The digibox is so much faster than ntl's one (both by Pace). You can record two things simultaneously (though you can't watch a third thing).
The live pause (great for answering "er, what did he just say?" or "did you see *that!?*") feature is handy; being able to watch a programme while it is still recording is brilliant; interactivity is useful (some BBC sports coverage and on Sky Sports).

There is a demo at http://www.sky.com/skyplus/launcher
