Unix,Mac, Sun???

    Could anyone tell me if other operating systems have a similar feature to the automatic windows update or even manually updating. And if so what are the steps involved with each OS. I've never used any of them.

    This might be more at home on the Unix (or Mac) forum...

    On Mac OSX I think it's called 'software update'. You run it and it pulls down all security updates for your OS. You can schedule it to run automatically if you want.

    Unix divides up into a lot of different categories:

    Older, more traitional UNIX flavours have pathcing systems but they tend to require a bit more manual intervention (or a bit more work to automate).

    Linux is again subdivided into many flavours and there are quite a few different update systems. Redhat and Mandrake use RPM and have simple automatic updating tools to suit. Debian (and its derivatives) uses APT and this can be automated easily. Gentoo has a FreeBSD-like Ports system. There are many more.

    Essentially, almost all have some kind of updates system. As it's linux it tends to update anything you hav installed and best of all you more than likely won't have to use an awful website in an awful browser to do it.

    unlike windows apt-get will update almost all programs and you can setup a local repository to do a LAN.

    Windows update does not work for windows 95, http://officeupdate.microsoft.com needs to be run separatly and other apps arent checked or updated by it. SUS needs a Windows 2000 server or better and won't update 98 or NT4, and won't update 2000 if it's using IE5.0

    Back in the day maybe but Redhat (Fedora) uses YUM (YellowDog update manager) now which offers comparable (if not even better) functionality to apt-get. RPM is simply the package media like .tardist in IRIX or .dpkg in debian
