A college student challenged a senior citizen, saying it was
impossible for their generation to understand his. "You
grew up in a different world," the student said. "Today we have
television, jet planes, space travel, nuclear energy,
computers..."Taking advantage of a pause in the student's
litany, the geezer said, "You're right. We didn't have those
things when we were young; so we invented them! What are you
    doing for the next generation??"

    ;)

tis like the american pen thing.

The americans spent millions of dollars developing this amazing hi-tech pen to be used on space missions which could write upside down, under water, in below -100 temperatures, in above 50 temps, could write on glass, could write at any angle etc.

    The Russians brought a pencil..

    Urban Myth.
Pencils made of conductive lead could cause short circuits in the electrical system.
The pen was made by a private company not NASA.

By the way the original joke is a generation too late - all those things were developed in the 50's, and they wern't developed by people just starting to work but by the senior researchers..

Yeah.. and I used to have one of those pens... they're really cool...

    Pencils are stupid...

-As opposed to the metallic pen-tip?
-Lead hasn't been used in pencils for 500 years, graphite is used.
-Can you ever envisage a situation where one would need to write on exposed circuitry?
