hey guys

Asked this in the comp section then realised this sect was here.

Just got ESAT 512k Broadband - ZyXel Prestige 600 and have a small problem,
I have my comp upstairs the family one downsatirs and my sister is getting a comp and my dad is gettin a laptop in a few weeks and i want to setup a wirless network for the internet and all that.Dont really know how? have a fair idea- i need a wireless router and a gateway per comp right?

What about this Router and this Gateway

Any advice would be all good.Cheers

Just got Esat 3 month trial myself last week. I went and bought a Linksys Wireless-G Router WRT54G from Elara.ie and a Linksys Wireless-G PCI Adapter WMP54G and a Linksys Wireless-G Notebook Adapter WPC54G.
Discovered that I don't need the PCI Adapter so if you want, I could sell that to ya for €60 incl P&P as I only got it on Friday last. It'll save ya a few quid anyway. The box is unopened. Reason I don't need it is I've connected the router and my PC through the supplied Ethernet cable which gives me a faster speed. Looks like you'll need 2 PCI Adapters and the Notebook Adapter and the Router for your setup.

Linksys router is a good one (go for it over the 3com) and that price is V.Good adapters are a bit on the steep side though.

Cool about the adapter,might take you up on it but just talkin to a guy from work and he said he could sort out a real cheap set of router and adapter for me so i dunno yet.I'll getback to ya ASAP.Cheers again

On answer to the other question i dont really know it is probably very small i would reckon

never mind that... a small bit of reading answered my question... duh

(oh and another stupid question, but how do i find out if i do have a wireless lan card? I got the laptop second hand, but when i was originally setting up a net connection on it it started connecting, or trying to connect, via WLAN. I can't find anything apparent within the harware profiles that would suggest a WLAN card... like a network adapter called WLAN )

flogen - wireless routers (like http://komplett.ie/k/ki.asp?sku=306148&view=detailed) come with an in-built 4 port hub so your wired and wireless networks can operate in harmony.

As for having a built-in wifi card in you laptop - usally if it does, you should have some sort of sign on the outside (little antenna and led. the led will flash when your wifi is running). Also laptop with inbuilt wifi usually have a switch to turn off the wifi plus if you have a pentium-m, its very likely there is a onboard wifi.

Plus in your network connections, it lists all your network adapters and their type.

Ya think il go for the bundle - that router is nearly as good and has the 4 way switch as well so happy days for a LAN if i need it.

cheers for that, I just read the blurg on the wireless router and saw that you could do it. thanks anyway.

I know I dont have wifi, but is there not a difference between wlan and wifi? I thought with a wlan card you can connect to a wireless network or to the internet if a wireless router is in use, but with wifi you can do that as well as connect to wifi hotspots and so on?

just from looking at my network connections I dont think I have anything other than the standard ethernet connection... it's just the fact that the laptop was trying to connect via WLAN when I got it first, I figured it had the capability and I just didnt have the bits and bobs to get it working
