    Eircom faces Morris tribunal over records

    EIRCOM staff are to be questioned at the Morris tribunal about how details of threatening telephone calls were erased from the company’s records.
    The inquiry into garda irregularities in Donegal has discovered inconsistencies in Eircom’s records and is investigating whether incorrect information was given by the telephone company to gardai “either by negligence or by fraud”.

    The tribunal, which is investigating the death of Richie Barron, a Raphoe cattle dealer, is planning to call a series of Eircom witnesses to explain the discrepancies next month.

    The tribunal is to investigate how Eircom’s records “completely erased incoming telephone calls to the Peopleses for a period of time”, its senior counsel revealed last week.

    As the company’s records were computer print-outs and contradicted the itemised bills obtained by Doherty and Flynn, the tribunal is to investigate whether there was deliberate interference to provide gardai with false information.

    Peter Charleton, one of the tribunal’s investigators, said last week that the Eircom discrepancy “didn’t happen once — it happened twice”.

    He also revealed a previous investigation into Barron’s death, conducted by Assistant Commissioner Kevin Carty in 1999, “ultimately had the same difficulty with Eircom, but that will be the subject of evidence towards the end of this module”.

    A spokesman for Eircom said this weekend that the company would co-operate fully with the inquiry. The discrepancies arose before the company was privatised when it was known as Telecom Eireann.
