    evening all,

My sister is looking at a '98 rover 400 with intent to buy. What do ye make of the car, anyone any issues or is there any problems she should be looking out for ala punto head gasket problems?

the car itself passed the nct last month, timing belt changed, no problems over the last 2 years bar a puncture.

    any help greatly appreacated!
    tom

    Chauffe, Marcel, chauffe!

The 400 series is quite a nice car, no major problems compared to other cars same age / size. There are loads of high spec models about. It is a bit old fashioned, even was that when it was brand new :)

The only thing is that it's second hand value is extremely low, so only buy it if it's very cheap. Check the Buy and Sell for prices

And check for cracked head gaskets

all I can add is head gasket, head gasket, head gasket!!

anyone I know of or have known to have a 200 or 400 series rover has had no end of trouble with head gaskets after about 65k they seem to give up!!

a bit like the old charade turbo in fact!!!

    nice car though!!

bit of a cheap honda but "cheap" being the operative word!!!

for all intents and purposes it's a honda but with a rover engine!!

Tell her to look for a 1.6 which is fitted with a honda engine and won't mean much extra on tax or insurance but will eliminate the probable headgasket failure. If it hasn't happened in the last two years, then it can't be far off!
