Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Part time work

I am looking for a job with specific enough hours. It would have to be Monday-Thursday, 13-15 hours in total.

I know the obvious thing would be to drop CV's into shops and supermarkets but I don't really want to do that for the following reason. The only reason I want those hours stated is because I'm in college for over 32 hours a week, not including study time. I want to spend my weekdays working and in college so at least I'll have the weekends off. If the worst comes to the worst I would be willing to work weekends. If I drop my CV into the shops I'd be interested in working and they don't want to take someone on for those hours (13-15 per week) I can hardly drop another one in later stating I'll work weekends.

I know I could obviously put down my preferred hours and also state I'd be willing to work weekends if those hours weren't available but if they know I'd be willing to work weekends surely they'd just ask me to do weekends and disregard my preferred hours?

All the above is probably a load of garbage so please tell me if it is.

Are there any agencies that deal with the kind of job I want? I'd honestly do most jobs that offer those hours (lets say 5-8 or 5-9 Mon-Thurs). Even a cleaning job as long as i'm not the only male in the place. ;)

Any tips would be great, especially agencies. A job offer would also be fantastic. :D

Nearly forgot to mention, I'm 18, living in South Central Dublin (Merrion Square to be precise) and have some retail experience.

    Thanks in advance.

chances of getting jobs that will allow you to work only 3-4 hours are going to be very think on the ground. like every other student in history you are looking for the holy grail of jobs that will pay you lots of money where you have to do nothing, at the times you want.

    it wont happen.
i spent 3 years working weekend nights til 4 or 5 am in a pizzaria. if you need the money, you will have to do these things. the only way to get really flexible hours is to either have a very good relationship with your employer, or to something like cleaning.

you could try mcdonalds, they tend to have a lot of students and understand the need for flexibility.

i dont know any agencies that will entertain you. youre not worth crap to them, and that means from a business point of view, you are not worth their time to place you.
accept the fact that you will end up like 99% of most students, in a crappy job, that will probably turn out to give you some of the best times of your student life.

oh, and i have never met anyone who can cook a pizza as good as i can :)

hehe, no i live close enough to merrion square. The house I'm living in was actually a tenants house bought by my granda for a few grand and passed down to my da. He's actually earning nothing more than 2 or 3 times the dole ATM as he runs 1 small car park and has someone working for him, lol. My ma is earning more but still nothing to shout about.

I think you're right WhiteWashMan but the only reason I want money is for drinking at weekends and having a bit of money for something like snooker every now and again. :) There would be no real point in working weekend unless i want to save for something. All my mates are tradesmen so weekend drinking is basically the only option.

I'll keep a look out anyway, hopefully something pops up.

and this is what i was talking about.
you have to have reasonable expectations about when you will be required to work.
we would all love to work monday and tuesday night, but realistically, we work when our employers tell us to work.

now, if you can find somewhere that opens only on monday and tuesday nights, allows you to watch porn, gives you a free ferrari and lap dances every 2 hours, your sorted...

Try McDee's. They're OK. Boring, but OK. Also, try Spar. If you have retail exp, and over 16, you stand a chance.

i work in tesco part time, and its something you might wanna look into. its not the greatest job in the world, but you're a student and dont have much choice. :)
part time work can vary depending on your availabilty. generally, they have alot of employees (mine has over 200) so they're pretty flexible and its usually easy enough to get hours you want (spesh if you work in one that opens late during the week) they'll want you to work sat and sun, which is sucky, but it wont be night time and you'll be able to go out afterwards. pay is 7.55 starting off, and is going up soon, which is decent for a part time job, and you get all the legally required breaks ( i know alot of people working in shops and net cafes that dont) plus time and a half every sunday.
alot of people make faces when i say i work in tesco, but they're the knobs who getting money off mammy and daddy for going out every weekend. they're a reasonable enough employer for students, and at the end of the day, beggars cant be chosers.

i'm in a similar situation, although i wouldn't mind working weekends..
the ideal would be to work in an internet cafe or video shop or something along those lines, but thats probably not gonna happen..

so are there any other jobs? ..jobs that are between those sucky jobs like working in mcdees and 'classier' jobs like working at a net cafe?
i'm at college in belfast and been looking for a decent part-time job for a while but tbh, at this point, i just may have to settle for something a little 'suckier' than i had hoped..

Im an 18 yr old student and I work in a pub (lounge staff) . I get E7 an hour and work on fri and sat nites from 8pm t0 3am.

However, Im just going to work there until xmas as my boss and customers treat me like S**T!

So, I was looking on nixers.ie for any jobs and i saw this job with movieextras.ie

Basically what they do is that they have photoshoots evry month where you get your photo taken and you sign up for annual membership. Your pic and details are posted up on the site and directors for commercials and films pick you out for being an extra in their movie/ad. u can read about it on the website , but they say that fair city needs 150 extras a week and you get about 100 eruro a day which isnt bad at all (for what you do)

The siter also stresses that there is no onus on you to accept an offer whatsoever so its like casual part time work.
Im going to the photoshoot nxt week (on sat) and ill let ye know how i got on. ok?

they charge you a hideous amount for that afaik, and you'll just be stuck up on a website with hundred of others.
do you really think directors for movies look through that?
