Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Ok I'm prob just gonna be considered stupid for not knowing this but what type of film is Donnie Darko? It's one I've heard of lots of times but never seen and we're trying to decide whether to go see it in college :)

Its a very hard film to tie down... It really is best you go in there without any preconceptions, though...

    action adventure

now go watch the damned thing!

Yeah best off going in not knowing much. It's fairly genre defying anyway.

You won't be disappointed though. It's a very special film.

Comedy, that patrick swayze guy is hilarious

It's in the genre 'Over-Hyped'. Sorry but I just don't think it's that special - it's allright but not that amazing. The ending is the equivalent of "I woke up and it was all a dream"

Had to listen to someone the other day yet again comment "I reckon it was all in his head". I shouted at them "Hello, that theme was interesting 5 years ago with Fight Club, then about a million films copied it and now it's boring. Donnie Darko gave us a change of scene, with a script that made it seem like the guy was mad, but was about actual time travel, as in the events really did occur, and that's why it's interesting and refreshing", but couldn't make myself heard over the "yes yes I think so too" babble.

this is why i find it hard to sympathise with people who dislike the film, since the majority of those people just dismiss it as stupid and confusing

just do yourself a favour and watch it with no preconceptions, you may love it or you may hate it, its definately not a "hollywood blockbuster" film

three things that immediately attracted me to the fiilm was
. Jake Gyllenhaal, great actor(excluding that day after tomorrow crap) puts in an amazing career best performance
. the dialogue, fantastic realistic BS free dialogue and very entertaining
. the music, really depends on your opinion on 80's music and 'mad world' in particular, but i think its fantastic

brilliant film, well worth the 7 or 8 quid most shops seem to be charging to buy it

is the extended version i saw in a shop the other day worth buying if i saw the original. does it add anything else to it? what are the extras like?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,838 ✭✭✭DapperGent

Adds a few scenes and a bit of exposition to the movie, I haven't had a chance to get through the extras yet.

Most of the time Director's Cuts are worth having if you were a huge fan of the original as I am with this movie. It's well worth a look.

    It's a Super Hero film.

What kind of name do you think Donnie Darko is anyway?

    I did do that.
The time warp means everything that happened during the film never actually happened. That's a cop-out the writer didn't want to end the film with a couple of dead people so it was sweetened a bit and only donnie was killed. Sort of 50's sci-fi B-film plot. EVERYTHING YOU HAVE JUST WITNESSED NEVER ACTUALLY HAPPENED *cue tacky closing music
 Still a good movie but not as good as some of you make it out to be.

clearly you didn't get the time-travel aspect of the film then.

What did I fail to get?

    Seems like the whole film!

Excellent piece that is really is worth a re-watch

That doesn't answer my question. What did I get wrong in my spoiler above? I don't think movies that you need to watch several times so that you can actually understand the plot are really that good.

Amazing film. Watched it several times, gets better every time. Very very sweet.

    Really?

Good to see that you view all films as single layers. I watch some films at different times and sometimes they mean different things to me. You don't see the re-watch value of something like The Usual Suspects then? There are definitely some films which require a re-watch and IMO Donnie Darko is one of them.

I don't want to rewatch something because I found it confusing and meandering. I will rewatch films if the are good and clever, Donnie was neither it was OK but nothing special. You are all begining to sound like people who say Ulysses is a classic because everyone else says it is. I'm sorry but if something, in my opinion, isn't up to the hype I'm going to say so. It's an OK movie but not a great.

different strokes for different folks as they say.i liked it because it was refreshingly different.it explored things that i have always had a passing interest in like time travel, consequences of actions and mortality......i mean, its just hard these days to find films that are made to be creative and thought provoking..most films are just concerned about money..i mean look at the cinema releases at the moment..could it be any more shyte?? why do we need alien v predator>>why ruin it all?? same with princess phucking diaries...did we really need a sequel to the first bit of drivelling crap?....
