Image Leeching

What are the admins views on image leeching. I've been stumbling across threads with images not hosted either locally or on the users webspace.

    http://pie.boards.ie/vbulletin/showpost.php?p=2007663&postcount=24

    This thread for example.

I know IGN probably wouldn't notice any bandwidth hit, but just think when the image is being leeched and the picture is a popular one. It will slow loading of the page down and cause other problems like people replacing it with dog porn and what not.

If they minded then they would just stop people taking the images. I had a problem like that recently with a fag on a forum using a flick from my web page as his avatar, when he refused to change it I just replaced the image with one of a gay dude holding his erection. He soon took it down.

Better out than in I always say!

If it's hosted elsewhere, that means it's not hosted on boards, thus possibly reducing the bandwidth costs that boards.ie would incur from hosting the same images itself.

It's really not that hard for IGN to set it up so that the images can't be remotely linked, so I doubt they have a problem with it.

Ecksor would like to turn off all external images, but I don't think he'd survive if he did ;)

It does pose some issues, but as Cult says, reduces load (to a certain degree) on the boards server. I reckon the latter outweighs the former, since problems with images are rare.

we'd rather people hosted images they intend to use on Boards on the boards members space. Taking images from the likes of SomethingAwful.com just makes them change the image to something nasty and then we get in trouble for your image leeching.

We do the same thing ourselves if we notice leechs (often other b.boards using our gathering cards believe it or not!)

Hands up those of you who, after first figuring out how to link to pictures from other sites, then proceeded to send emails to everyone on your address list, family included, with an originally hilarious picture linked from Somethingawful.com in the signiature?

Nobody? Uh, good. Because Lord knows I certainly didn't either. Nope. Er...

Common sense i would imagine , IGN etc are portals for games , they allow this to happen as it benefits them. The "etiqutte" is when you post a IMG of one of their pics you link to the article/ page with more pics. Most big webistes allow this as long as the image is linked with a http clickable link too.

Others dont allow it they the ones who actually look at their hosting bill :)

I leech (if one can do such a thing) from my own webspace which isn't hosted by boards. I'm assuming this is okay with the admins too?

No your own space is financed by yourself, so it's yours.

I'm on something awful, and they BAN users for image leeching!

Sometimes I have thought about posting Nazi symbols after such statements by ecksor, but while to a 13-year-old they're funny, to quite a lot of other people (including ecksor, some posters, and myself if it was directed at me), it's an offensive thing to post, to compare one to a (German) Nazi. The more I read about Mr. Hitler and his reich, the more shocked I get, even though it's fifty years old. And the more I realise that no matter how liberal or "you gotta have humour about everything" one is, you cannot ignore how completely psychotic, inhumane and insane Hitler was. I think to compare any living human to that man is an insult to that person's humanity.

I apologise to ecksor for any time I giggled to myself at the though of posting facist images after statements like he has above. In fact, work experience has shown me that his ideas have merit, and far from being conservative paranoia, they do sometimes represent good practice and common sense, given the open nature of the internet as we know it.

I'm quite drunk. Yes. I've spell checked this post about 5 times. {Edit: And I still missed one. /me hugs Vodka

Fascist imagery I can cope with. But please, for the love of all that you hold sacred, can you please spell it correctly!

Is that meant to be some sort of anti-semetic comment about pigs?

Seeing as the pics have 'IGN.com' branded on them, it's like free advertising for IGN.

Aye, aswell as that I think its ok if you mention where you got the images from (which I did in my first post). Another thing is I definatly don't have the space on my members boards account to be hosting all th images I leech on a daily basis.

I'm sure IGN would be more insulted if I took their images, edited out the logo and uploaded it to my own webspace. Thats why they put their brand their images in the first place.

It's not IGN i'm worried about though, just an example.

If people want to post images not hosted on boards space, they should have their own hosting space or just not post the image at all.

Any college student has no excuse as all they need do is join their local computer society and use that web-space.
