Listen to the judith? Notice how he keeps questioning the christian belief system? Do you think this is just a ploy to generate controversy and thus more record sales or a genuine statement of disgust at the christian religion at large? I like a good ol profound debate every now and then so i'll give my two cents on it: tool were never a very publicity obsessed band and part of this i think stems from MJK cos lets face it most bands opinions are influenced by their lead singer. mainly cos he/she is the one writin and spoutin the lyrics. so by my logic (which seems to conflict with others on a regular basis) shouldnt APC be the same as tool when it comes to not sayin things just to get noticed?

Many metal bands hold anti-christian views, it's nothing new whatsoever, and as such isn't exactly going to raise much controversy at all, not by any stretch of the imagination. Take a look at a band as ham-fisted as Deicide who's every song is bashing christianity, and compare that with the amount of sucess and record sales they've got. Quite frankly they're still pretty underground in the grand scheme of things, so I'd hardly think the same would apply to A Perfect Circle.

Aside from that, holding a viewpoint isn't nessicerally pretentious either.
    It's a pretty geniune statement I found.

If he's questioning things it should make you think about his questions... and making people think is a very good thing IMO. Why should organised regilion be a taboo considering all the woe it has (or rather it's fanatical followers have) caused? If he sings what he believes, even if I disagree with it, then I've no problem with his subject matter. Surely the cheeky girls singing 'touch my bum' is a lyric more disturbing than anything which promotes thought?

Didn't Billy Howerdel write the lyrics with Maynard? And APC are a different band to Tool, how do you know that the band as a whole don't want to express these views?

Are you actually offended by him questioning christianity? If so, I question it too. Muhahahaha!

listening to MJK's work with tool and what's been leaked from tapeworm, i'd say he's a bit of a philosopher a-la the wachowski brothers. i.e. he knows quite a bit but is really just re-iterating old idea's from books.

all that philosphical stuff is just a joke or band image.

MJK is a genius and dont let anybody tell you otherwise,
you cant get a better album than Lateralus, the amount of people I converted to good music just by getting them to listen to that album is unreal.
APC are just another of MJK's projects and to be perfectly honest with you they are even better than tool, such good harmonies and his voice is just amazing
Cant wait for the new album

If you listen to a lot of the earlier Tool lyrics, his rants against religion (especially Christianity) are epic (see: "Opiate", "Disgustipated", "Eulogy", etc). And bear in mind that this was before Tool had mainstream success. I have absolutely no doubt that MJK is genuine in his scorn and contempt for Christianity.
    Because it's neither nor?
    Yes, exactly. :D

Im not actually saying whether its right or wrong, im just posing the question. Personally i couldnt give a toss about religion or anything like it but an awful lot of bands damn religion just to look good.
Sometimes bands have a reason to hate religion though. A scandinavian band called Finntroll are really anti-christian but their reasoning is that christians persecuted their ancestors.

PS just in case you all thought otherwise i do believe that MJK is a genius and hes not just tryin to sound cool.

Yes, because speaking out about religious is the fast ticket to money, drugs, women and power.

I read on the APC site shortly after Mer De Noms was released that Judith isnt about God, but in reality is about people praising others blindly (and seeing them as godly).

So they arent questioning Christianity, they're questioning the way people act sometimes and using God as a metaphore.. or something. :D

And I think MJK and the rest of Tool are brilliant, they're not philosophers though, theyre just passing on the point of view they have come to believe through other great minds.

To be honest - it's so easy to get caught up in the 'publicity machine' that surround music acts & all the hype, 'contraversy' & the rest - why can't people with APC just get past that & deal with the fact that they do make some of the best music out there @ the moment [the jury seems to be out on eMOTIVe though.....]

Bang-on there flogen. I read a lot of stuff on their website around the Mer de Noms-era. A lot of posters were complaining that they didn't like the message sent by Judith, but the band themselves came out and explained the lyrics. Maynard insists that the song isn't attacking a Christian God, but instead is attacking the things that the modern-day world worships - money, etc. He emphasised the actual line in the song "Fùck YOUR God", meaning the objects of worship in modern life. He also said that the song attacked "blind faith" aswell, but didn't go into much detail on exact points.
