    and what the **** was the story with whoopi goldberg in the next generation? what purpose/rank did she have? why was she on the bridge several times?

    She was the bartender n stuff. She also happened to belong to some sort of super race who were wiped out by the borg. Because Picard was such an all round top bloke, he saw how useful a good martini can be in a crisis and let her mooch around the bridge.

    I think it was something to do with her being hundreds of years old and from some race that had been around for centuries. Her race had encountered just about every species in the universe so she was able to advise Picard about how to deal with aliens - therefore was allowed on the bridge from time to time. once I think she just showed up on the bridge without permission though (naughty).
