Hi there, does anyone know where i can get CV joints replaced on a landrover discovery, other than stuart garages? every private garage in south county dublin run a mile.. all they're interested in is changing the oil and filters. which i can do myself.

what happened to all the real mechanics out there?

    cheers,

    G

I'd say the complication of modern engines in general and proprietary interfaces in particular would have much to answer for.

well, a 1994 discovery is hardly the pinnacle of modern technology.

does anyone else remember the days you had radiator specialists, disk brake skimmers, gearbox mechanics, etc?

    i'm only 30 btw...

it's really sad to think we've become such consumers that we throw away things like cars because of simple wear and tear faults on them, that for a few hundred notes could be fixed..

Indeed, and a lot of modern engines are still pretty basic. But you wanted to know what happened to all the mechanics, and that's what happened imho. These days it seems to me that a traditional apprenticeship won't cut it any more, you need a college education to keep with it. You need a degree just to get the covers off some modern engines.

There's a load of "traditional" mechanics down here btw and I couldn't see any of them turning down a CV job unless there was some serious awkwardness involved. Are you sure it's not one of those "take the engine out and spin it round three times to empty the ashtray" jobs?

no offence meant, but judging by the urls in your sig, cruiseNi, i'd probably not be looking for your kind of services.. spoilers, rims and flourescent lights are not what i'm after..

just a good reliable yoke for pulling speedboats and windsurfers.

I only deal with factory standard cars in work, my other hobbies and interests in modified cars is after work mate ;)

Ask yourself why mechanics wont work on your Land Rover, its because there hassle and you'll more things wrong with them then there worth, thats been honest

Has the Disco served you well? They're not known for their reliablity in fairness, try a Ford garage, I think they own land rover.
