Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Soccer rivarly

Well I have to say I'm a little disappointed by the way all the threads relating to the Man Utd Arsenal game on Sudnay have been closed. I mean soccer is about Rivarly, I was in a bar in Killarney on Sunday watching the game and there was an even spread of supporters for both teams and the rivarly was great. There was a lot of debating about the refs decisions but everyone remained civil towards each other.

We should be able to discuss games like the one on sunday without people making it personal or been totally blinded by there love for a team.

Soccer without rivarly is like sex with a condom.

Indeed. Although I can't really remember anyone making it personal on these forums apart from one or maybe two. I love the banter after games, especially after a United win and I'm sure if Arsenal had to win most of their supporters would be the same.

It's all part of being a supporter, no matter what you follow.

I am very dissapointed at my genuine effort to discuss Arsen Wengers role in recent events being closed. If the forum is not open for discussion there is no point in having one. Thats all I have to say on the matter for the moment .

Am a tad disappointed myself!.....Suppose its a way of saying though "Please move on to something else, enough has been said of this" allthough United and Arsenil fans will be talking of this for another week anyways!....Look at how the last Battle of OT went!

I think they were closed because of the amount of bannings going on , and before Sunday's game it was a long time since someone was banned .
I can't remember exactly but did last seasons game bring a few banings aswell ?

Yep... I'm a little surprised that the Mods are taking them so seriously to threaten to ban some of the boards members. I don't know about the other board members but I was genuinely trying to discuss my views on the game itself also. Of course there will be conflicting views, but that is the same with everything. What is the point in having this forum if we can't have conflicting views on how we see games? I think as long as it doesn't resort to anything malicious like personal insults/racism etc. there shouldn't be any problems.

That is my views anyhow. Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong to think this way.

It was probably for your own good that they were closed so I wouldn't complain. Rivalry is one thing, trolling is another, we don't want to go back to the bad old days of this forum.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 26,458 ✭✭✭✭gandalf

Heres the situation boys & girls. Before the two threads that were closed there were no bannings here since the relaunch. We had 4 because of these. 2 because they were either insulting or trolling and 2 poor individuals who sponsored one of the banned. I had people via the complaint system baying for others to be banned as well and even on the mod forums too.

So I have a choice leave the threads run and myself, talla, vagga & thanxs clean up after you all or I take pre-emptive action. At the moment I do not have that much time to act as a kindergarten teacher to you all so I will take pre-emptive action, if someone wants to stand up play who's got the biggest balls I will ban you from here as well.

If you want mindless trolling etc then fuk off to the football365 forum.

Now if only Mike Riley had had the same attitude in that game!

Sorry Syke but as you well know one persons opinion is another mans Troll. I like Pornapster was only expressing opinions. Its not our fault if the kids can't handle differing opinions and go off whinging to the mods. That is not a troll but is honestly how I feel at the moment.

You are the only person to have neg repped me in the last two weeks and on each occasion you accused me of trolling on this forum. On each occasion I wasn't. Its easy to justify your actions by throwing around accusations of Trolling but just because someone expresses an opionion you disagree with does not mean they are guilty of trolling.

Fair enough Gandalf, but maybe the people who are looking for the bannings are doing so simply because they disagree. I mean just because a United fan feels certain that Mike Riley made the right decisions doesn't mean they should be banned or called a troll, unless the meaning of the word troll has changed, I think otherwise but that doesn't mean I'm trolling when I'm expressing my opinion.

People on both sides and neutrals had their opinions and the majority expressed them without insulting members personally. Now your the mod and you have the right to close whatever thread you see fit. The point I was trying to make was that if you take the rivarly away from this great game that we all love you have nothing left and if you take it away from the forum then we might as well become talking robots with no opinions.

I'm not trying to stir the sh*t or go against the mods just saying it as I see it.

    Well said Muppet.

I noticed on a couple of occasions while I was posting that people were trying to get me banned for something that I did not do. Someone at one stage tried to say that I was personally insulting someone on the forum, when I clearly directed my post to Thierry Henry and no one else.

Opinions are opinions. This is a forum, not a play ground. We debate things here which involves opinions. Now if someone wants to take my right to an opinion away from me I would gladly leave. But as I am entitled to my opinion and as long as the mods see that I am only interested in giving my opinion on Soccer and Soccer alone then I'm here to stay. And I'm pretty sure that is the same with Muppet and other members that were trying to express their opinions on the match.

I could see those threads being closed from a mile away. What really annoys me about any of the big games between the likes of Arsenal or ManU is coming into work on a Monday morning and having to trawl through pages upon pages of arguing and trolling from all the usual suspects. (why is it always the same people??)

Debating the points of contention in any game is fine but having to read childish tit for tat is just boring. TBH for most threads on big games I just don't bother reading them due to the time I'd have to invest reading what is mostly tripe or arguing for the sake of arguing.

I think the mods done the sensible thing this time.

Exactly. Foe Instance I didn't like or agree with Irish1's comments on the match but I respected his right to express them. I didn,t complain to the mods. or accuse him of trolling. There needs to be more tolerance of differing opinions on the forum.

Yeah was disappointed all the threads were locked, particularly yours muppet. Cant understand how people feel the need to complain about the threads. The mods can see well enough whats going on as some of them were actively participating in the thread, and they banned anybody that stepped over the line quick smart, and fair play.

However I think something like this happened last time the two teams met, and its not going to stop. Its almost like people cant discuss anything that involves both United and Arsenal.

Thanks Jivin Turkey it is a pity we appear to be unable to discuss this fixture that said I now understand why the threads were closed.

I too am confused as to why people make the mods life more difficult by lodging juvenile complaints about people expressing opinions that they don't agree with. I suppose itmust be down to a clash of personalties and points scoring.

    Cheers

Once again a thread where we TRY to discuss something to do with arsenal is closed just cause it does not Gandalf. Personally I think this has become the "do not insult an arsenal player or Gandalf will close the thread!"

Again Gandalf can you tell us why the thread about ashley cole was closed??? I did not see you closing the RVN thread there, so tell why we cannot discuss the ashley cole story?

Maybe it has something to do with the fact that the world does not revolve around Moan Utd and Arse, not everyone is a glory hunter and hard as it is to believe some of us don’t support the “big two” and get bored with the inane “my team is better than yours” crap.

Gandalf any chance of creating a Moan United/Arse forum so the rest of us can get on with discussing football? :D

Did you not read Gandalfs explanation for closing the Man United Arsenal thread ?
He also explained why the Cole thread was closed. BTW in that thread you could quite easily have been banned for the following choice comment - We know Cole is a twat - which is in contravention of the rules of this forum. Would you like to query the mods decision not to ban you for that ?

while i can see how it may have been necessary I feel its a bit overboard to not allow those having a civil discussion to continue it while banning those who cross the line.

I would disagree that everyone should be "punished" because of the actions of a few bad eggs.

That being said, I myself ceased participation in the threads because I felt it was getting a) repetitive and b) heated.

I even got negative rep for saying that I thought RVN is a cheater :)

In all fairness, if the "kids" want to cry rivers over nothing, then let them do so in the personal issues forum. I think it is pretty dissapointing to see threads being closed especially over a bit of banter.

I mean for ****s sake, if calling ashley cole a twat is a banning offence. Then what the hell happens when you call Van Nistelrooy horseface? There are some things which need to be sorted out. :(

"I mean for ****s sake, if calling ashley cole a twat is a banning offence. Then what the hell happens when you call Van Nistelrooy horseface? There are some things which need to be sorted out"

Exactly, selective modding from what I can see. Tell me what the difference between calling cole a twat and RVN Horseface is, so I take it that there is?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,483 ✭✭✭Töpher

Horseface is a bit of a joke in terms of his appearance. It's like calling Lee Hendrie something that somewhat resembles a monkey. Hell, even Utd fans call Rooney Shrek. Calling someone a twat is the same as calling them a moron or an idiot, and can be seen as personal abuse.*

Outbursts of personal abuse/racism etc, be it directed at other board members or at Sports people will not be tolerated.

Oh yes, and its also because everyone here is biased towards the Arsenal

*Or so is my understanding of it.

These guys are not members of this forum so how can calling some multi-millionaire football star who nobody knows or has met an idiot/twat/moron be possibily construed as personal abuse!!!

Is the word twat banned from here? If I called a fellow forum member a twat, I would expect to get banned but that is not what is happening. People need to learn to enjoy the banter and stop taking every minute thing to their big hearts. I would hate to see some of youse actually at a game if that kind of thing is offensive!

  • Moderators, Regional North East Moderators Posts: 12,739 Mod ✭✭✭✭cournioni

They're professional footballers. The media call them twats every so often, so we should be able to do the same. Its not like they give a **** what we think of them.

The reason while people get banned from the Soccer Forum for using words like Twat and others like it is because of the way the Soccer Forum descended into farce a few months ago due to people purposely using such words to Troll other members. Which inevitably resulted in other non-related threads being ruined purely because some people felt it necessary to defend the honour of their oh so important super hero football stars as if the players even gave a flying fúck if they’d been insulted by some over zealous football supporter on an internet forum.

Anyway, what I’m trying to say is that while banter is all well and good, some people are just Twats themselves and just feel the need to wind people up for the sake of it, which in all fairness ruins it for everybody else. And I also agree that sometimes the Mods can be a bit biased towards what’s appropriate and what’s not but it’s not as if they are getting paid for monitoring every thread that is posted. Sometimes they just have to be pragmatic and give the aul banning stick a bit of an airing!

Personally I'd prefer them being there making the odd few mistakes, rather then having to trawl through mindless Trolling and Jibberish.

Just to stick up for gandalf here, he was not reposible for all bannings or thread closures so its unfair that he should be accussed of being biased, i've closed threads and banned people as well. The last week in this forum has been ridiculous with the amount of reported posts and crap that we've been trying to keep an eye on, we actually do have jobs in the real world that we've to do. Instead we are spending our time in here trying to keep control of things. So if it comes down to trying to keep control of some kids bickering in a thread over who called which player what or trying to make a living, i'm sorry but closing the thread is going to win out everytime!!

OK back here was busy all yesterday so sorry if I couldn't give you all the explaination you wanted  Again Talla has hit the nail on the head, given the choice of spending all my time cleaning up and banning after people lose the run of themselves here or earn a living I actually have no choice I will take pre-emptive action.

I actually do not mind people calling players names etc as long as it doesn't libel boards, yops thread was closed down because I viewed it as a possible flash point considering the previous experience in the other Man U vs Arsenal threads.

BTW Dub calling another poster on this board a name is normally a big mistake. Someone in the heat of the moment did step over this line last week and I am watching their conduct on here very closely at the moment and if they digress again in this manner they will be taken care of.

Actually depending on the context yes it does consitute personal abuse. Now your new so you probably do not understand the background to all this. In the past this forum turning into somewhere where no intelligent threads existed just flame wars and trolls. We rectified that, if I see anyone starting that crap again I will ban them from here and if I think its necessary get them banned from the boards totally. Now step down!

I don't think the problem is with rivalry, it's more the way you fúcking idiots express your rivalry. i.e. approaching a discussion of a game of football like hyperactive gibbons.

Looking over the threads now (I didn't bother at the time), 90% of you were just being total assholes to each other, including some of the dozy fúckers whinging about it above. Personally I couldn't give a fúck if half the people on that thread were banned (and if it had been left open a whole lot more of you would have been), I object to having to wade through oceans of bile and just pure out and out fúcking stupidity while trying to read a discussion about an interesting football match.

I also object to idiotic threads like this and others cluttering up a good forum for days and weeks afterwards during which some other moron attempts to make a point and starts the whole whingbag clusterfúck up again.

A lot of you need to show some common sense and restraint. You cúnts make me sick.
