Oh God no! Hate New Years for two reasons it never lives up to the hype and it always seems laboured* and when New Year's is over it always means it the end of the Christmas holidays and therefore back to work!!!

My favourites are Christmas Eve and Stephen's Day.

*Although having said that, I've had some cracking New Year's down through the years. But not many!

If I had to nominate any "special day" 26th would be it, but often I AM at work the following day! :(

I love Christmas too :) - the whole two weeks we close for is brilliant and the day we finish we always go to lunch with the boss and get a very generous bonus that I spend fairly fast ;) Love new years eve too - we always have a great house party. Coming in 3rd is Paddy's Day. The craic in the pub is great.

New years is the biggest anti-climax ever.

Halloween is one of the better days of the year alright

Mine's Halloween too, i throw a party every year, i love fancy dress :D Christmas involves being at home too long until you family drive you mad, new years is indeed an anticlimax. The worst day of the year is easy, that has to be Valentines day. Does anyone like it???

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,068 ✭✭✭stagolee

normaly id say xmas eve but this year im working right through xmas :( so ill say newyears its normaly a bit of an anticlimax but theres the odd absolutley classic one every so often :D

Valentine's is just over-rated. I mean it's just another day in the year, yeah it's nice to take time out and spend it with ur loved one etc. but come on.. it's turning into a small Christmas!! commercial crap!!!!

but I do like it :D

    HAPPY LOVE DAY, EVERYONE!!!!!111ONE

I prefer Christmas. Not because of its religious bits. It's one of the few times the family is in the same place at once, and everyone's relaxed and contented.

This Christmas is going to be the first I have to work for all week. I'm not looking forward to it. Of course, the day I quit this meaningless excuse for a job will likely remain my favourite for many months after...

October 30th and on certain years i get to have a 25 hour birthday. not this year though :(

actually I despise valentines day. Its another money racket too soon after christmas.

Christmas Day is always good. I get nostalgiac sometimes thinking back to the way my borthers and sister and me used to gather at the top of the stairs and go down together on Christmas morning and see what was under the tree. It's actually one of those moments I'd love to relive and feel the excitement and innocence of it all again.

Having said that, I do get an incredible peace at Christmas and enjoy it immensly. Midnight mass (well 9.30pm mass really), the walk home after, cup of Barry's tea, staying up past midnight just talking about nothing in particular, opening one or two presents after that.

The Christmas morning walk, everyone greets each other as they pass in the street, Carols on the radio, the post dinner lol in the couch watching some old film and dozing off half way through, the stillness of the church on a quiet visit to the crib in the afternoon. Trivial pursuit in the evening with a few cans, sound asleep as soon as the head hits the pillow...
    Sweet dreams....

I like that day when Spring arrives. The day when you know Winter is over.
But to be specific, I kinda really like St. Stephen's day.

I love Christmas. Although my job has killed most of the fun of the runup to it.
I also like my birthday (24th June - Summermas Eve!), though it sucked this year because I was dealing with a lot of college-related crap. Though Metallica were on the day after so all was well. :)

Probably 21st June - longest day of the year! Though I have got drunk and depressed on this date - it's my birthday and I'm sooo old! Can't really nominate a date that invariably has a feel good factor tbh! This is probably the closest. Next Xmas - but this can be so sh1t - especially if your cutoff from friends and family! Or even if your not - sitting there contemplating the horrible bill on plastic you're going to get shortly...

I've always wondered why people consider birthdays so special. All you've done is hang around for a year. Anyone could do that.

Hmm Barry's - there are times I would kill for a pint. Then also kill for Barry's tea - when not available. Should be available more than McD's imho! Do I sound naive here? Look at the facts - Guinness did it!

    Just can't imagine drinking a super-strength Barry's in India though :p

Definitely halloween. I must have been a pagan in my past life, because there's something so magical and enchanting about it, it's always been much better than Christmas for me. I know all this commercialised crap, trick-or-treating and fireworks stuff is annoying, but behind it all there's a really great celebration, laced with ominous undertones. The best kind.

    *gets excited*

Actually, is there anything decent on in Dublin for Halloween? And by decent, I DON'T mean a load of young people getting pissed drunk in some sweatbox club. I mean something pagan-y. There's a mini-newgrange thing near enough to my house, I always planned to have a bonfire atop it, but I've yet to get around to doing it.

Ehm, it's a bit short notice really. Anyways, I was thinking something a bit more spiritual, it is All Hallow's Eve we're talking about here after all. Perhaps some salvia is in order..

My BIOS (BiologIcal Operating System, commonly known as biological clock) is fuxored. It has always worked off a 26 hour day leaving me wide awake at night and knackered in the morning. Anybody any tips for flashing my BIOS?

Theres a couple of weeks around christmas that are just great.

December 24th - Christmas Eve and my aunts birthday. Usually involves a few hot whiskeys in the pub, leave at around 9pm and go home, sit around the fire and chat with the family and watch telly.

December 25th - Christmas Day.... need I say more?

December 28th - My brothers birthday. Pub, Shambles, a deadly laugh.

December 31st - New Years Eve.... self explanatory.

January 1st - Lovely big dinner, tending to hangover, sitting around doing nothing and loving it.

January 3rd - My birthday. Also my mams birthday. Nice to share it with her.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,811 ✭✭✭✭billy the squid

nothing feels better than being handed your three weeks wages before christmas. specially when there is overtime in there.

straight to the pub for a christmas drinkie.

Has to be Christmas day ... This year will be weird, 'cause I'm moving outta home on Monday & the better half & I plan to spend our first Christmas in the new house, so I only see the folks for an hour or two in the morning ... Ah feck, now I'm depressed :(

    My birthday!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,313 ✭✭✭sanncoo

I'm a softie for celebrations of any kind....

Number 1 my Burpday! Think everyone should make a fuss of their birthday. Plus as it's on the 29th Oct, it usually falls on or around the bank holiday and if like this weekend, halloween falls on the weekend too......fan-bloody-tastic!!!!

Halloween - for all the reasons mentioned above....

Next christmas day, despite my age I am a big kid at heart....we all are in our family and Santa Claus still leaves me little presents (cos I can afford the big ones myself!!) in the sitting room at home.....We all meet up for mass (one of the few days I go now) and go home for a big fry up! We do the gift giving to each other after breakfast. Then all the relations call one after the other so there is lots of drinking and laughing. We eat dinner late in our house on Christmas Day.

New Years is a no no, I think we build it up into something huge and it never lives up to it's expectations.....

Valentine's Day is over commercialised......but as I said above I'm a sucker for any type of celebration...

    ;)
