Reducing file size of photos?

Im probably in the wrong forum but ive a load of pictures taken with a 5MP Digital camera and most of the file's are over 1MB, how do i compress these photos so i can display them on a web page, id also like to make the actual display size smaller? Sean

paintshop pro or photo shop will do it
or google for a free app that will change the resolution of a pictures
