NTL profits lower despite sales rise

    November 03, 2004 17:42

Cable operator NTL Ireland has reported a drop in profits for the third quarter of this year, despite an increase in revenues.

Profits fell by 17.6% compared with Q3 last year to €8.9m, but NTL said this was entirely due to savings from a successful renegotiation of a number of contracts with suppliers last year. These were not repeated this year.

Revenues were 3.5% higher at €26.5m, driven by price increases and growth in digital television subscribers.

Residential customer numbers were up 2,500 to 343,600, while digital customer numbers moved up 6,600 to 88,000. Broadband customer numbers were 5,400, and the company said the number of homes upgraded and available to receive broadband had more to 66,500.

More from Silicon Republic. Is there a list of all of the new areas that have been upgraded?
38,500 more homes can connect to NTL broadband

03.11.2004 - NTL Ireland has reported that homes now marketable for broadband have increased to 66,500 up by some 38,500 in the past quarter. However, the company reported a slim 3.5pc revenue increase during the quarter to €26.5m.

The company explained that the 3.5pc revenue rise was primarily due to price increases and additional growth in digital television subscribers.

Segment profit at NTL Ireland decreased by 17.6pc to €8.9m in Q3 2004 compared to €10.8m in Q3 2003. This decrease is entirely due to benefits realised in Q3 2003 from the successful renegotiation of a number of major supplier contracts that were not repeated in Q3 2004.

Customer number performance was extremely encouraging in Q3 2004. Overall residential customer numbers increased by 2,500 to reach approximately 343,600 (including MMDS customers) and digital television customers increased by 6,600 to approximately 88,800.

Homes marketable for broadband increased by 38,500 to reach approximately 66,500. Broadband customer numbers grew to approximately 5,400 at the end of Q3 2004, reaching a penetration level of 8.1pc.

Commenting on the results, Graham Sutherland, managing director of NTL Ireland, said: “NTL Ireland continues to show positive progress in an increasingly competitive marketplace. We remain committed to improving our market penetration in both our residential and business divisions, and are very encouraged by the increase in our customer numbers during Q3 2004.”

Thats not bad for a product that is hardly advertised at all and which sells itself largely by word of mouth .

It has the best reputation, so people get it on recommendation. Does that 8.1pc sound like 8.1pc of households or 8.1pc of all NTL subscribers Muck?

Thats 8.1% of the category "Homes marketable for broadband" Seamus. That would be upgraded cable areas not all cable areas. We should ask NTl to send their "Fat Honest Dave" equivalent along to the Dáil to chunter a few stats at the deppities
