more on 12-month contract: can they really charge you if you leave the country

At the risk of boring everyone on the 12-month contract, can they really charge you if you leave the country? my phone is from eircom and dsl from esat bt - when i leave I will cancel the phone line, so surely it will be hard for esat bt to charge then? anyone heard of this situation?
