Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Holy Sh!t I Fuking Hate that ad with a Passion! It's so Fuking stupid, what do they take us for?

And then at the end of the ad Lisa says: "Look mom, dads on RTE 2" Does NOT sound remotely like Lisa!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 293 ✭✭Buck Owens

It sounds more like "Look mum, Dad's on RD2"

It's a really annoying ad alright!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,389 ✭✭✭✭Saruman

Its stupid but she is speaking with an Irish accent in it.. maybe in some twisted logic they are trying to make it sound like she is putting on an Irish acccent for her Irish penpal... oh umm RTE logical? :D Maybe not...

i hate all the ****in smarties ads that sponsor the simpsons on rte even more than this.

It's awful. it's almost as if someone (is Kevo still in air tee eee?) came in and said "yeah, my sister does a good Lisa Simpson" and they just threw it into the advert. It's a reasonable impression for four seconds in the pub. it's pretty darned awful as something broadcast repeatedly. Awful.

Havnt seen it yet but thats because i dont watch RTE anymore. Its ****e like that that has put me off watching RTE. Its almost as bad as that terrible UTV Ulster Television channel, I'd prefer to watch cows eating silage.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,746 ✭✭✭pork99

They couldn't get the original Lisa Simpson so they got the non-union Mexican equivalent - remember this?
    Burns: Get me Steven Spielberg!
    Smithers: He's unavailable.
Burns: Then get me his non-union Mexican equivalent!
[later] Listen, Senor Spielbergo, I want you to do for me
what Spielberg did for Oskar Schindler.
Spielbergo: Er, Schindler es bueno, Senor Burns es el diablo.
Burns: Listen, Spielbergo, Schindler and I are like peas in a pod:
we're both factory owners, we both made shells for the
Nazis, but mine worked, dammit! Now go out there and win me
    that festival!

Funny. I must be the only person to think it's OK then. I never watch The Simpsons on RTE, so I'm kind of willing to let them have this promo department person have their dues.

The voice seems to start off pretty well, but becomes worse as it goes on. (Previous poster's "Dad's on RD2" is spot on). Still, though, it could be a lot worse, and the selection of shots to match the voice isn't terrible.

What is awful, though, is RTE's scheduling of the promo *everywhere*, even among programmes which wouldn't remotely be watched by the audience of The Simpsons. It's almost like they're trying to show off the promo...!

I have to say this is the worst add ever.

But in fairness to RTE I don't think they generally do bad promos.

But RTE TWO curently looks crap.

Funny. I wondered about this too. She probably means he's the person who most understands her, but definitely bad scripting!

This ad bugs the hell out of me.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,525 ✭✭✭daymobrew

I just emailed RTE to tell them how bad the promo is.
I sent it to info@rte.ie but maybe I should have mailed complaints@rte.ie.

The wording of the promo makes it sound like it was done by Americans with a dated view of Irish (i.e. sounds "orish").

oooh the 'cow's eating silage' video, I've seen that. Don't confuse it however with the café scenes in Fair City.. that's a different kind of silage altogether

I hate that ad so much. How can they think that the voice actor they got to do Lisa's voice sounds remotely like Lisa.

But honestly, have you ever known someone who can do a very good Lisa Simpson impression? Her voice is quite unique, even the actress who plays Lisa has a really unusual voice.

  • Registered Users Posts: 725 ✭✭✭talking_walnut

God I loathe this ad. How the hell did RTÉ think this was a good idea? It's one of the few things on T.V that actualy make me turn over when it comes on.

Oh and that bart being her soulmate thing really gives me the creeps. It's not just what she says, its the way she says it

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,460 ✭✭✭Blisterman

You'd think for all the thousands RTE must pay Fox, they could get the real simpsons actors to record a promo.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 28,128 ✭✭✭✭Mossy Monk

    Matt Groening should sue

that promo is horrendous and makes me cringe everytime i see it
the sponsored by smarties thing is muck aswell

This is true. If you ever see her guest star in any sitcoms or movies - she's been in a few - you'd know her a mile away! She sounds just like Lisa in real life too!

I agree with Blisterman, though - Fox really should be more open to this kind of promotional recording. There have been examples of US stars recording stings of "You're watching 'Programme X' on 'Channel Y'" for many UK and Irish channels in the past - it wouldn't have been impossible to accomplish. Maybe RTE were lazy and just didn't ask.

The simspsons cast are voicing Channel's 4 Alternative Christmas Speech this year!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 144 ✭✭Aava

I thought it's just Marge who's doing the speech? Could be wrong though.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 510 ✭✭✭Amnesiac_ie

No, all the family will be contributing... Lisa is going to do some politcal speech about Iraq I think!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,525 ✭✭✭daymobrew

I just got the following response from RTE. I've removed the author's name to avoid their embarassement.
Thank you for contacting RTE with regard to the Lisa Simpson impersonation on the promo. I am the producer of the piece, and I am sorry you don't like the promo.

It took a while to find some-one with anything near the right voice, and then we had to raise it an octive, electronically, the result was as close as we could get. I agree it's not perfect, but it pokes fun, advertises the show, and is not meant to be taken literally.

Again, my apologies if you feel we failed, thank you for letting us know you views, feedback from our audience in invaluable if we are to improve our standards.

    Regards,

    *name removed*

Oooh, RTE can raise voices by an octave *electronically* now...

FFS, If they couldn't get Yeardley Smith to do the voiceover surely the could have done something along the lines of the current (excellent) channel 4 ad promoting the simpsons.

Did (s)he actually remove their name from the e-mail itself? Wouldn't blame them. The shame of directing that ad must be crippling.

I removed it before posting it to lessen the person's shame.
The mail sig had blurb about the mail being for the adressee and how it should not be distributed beyond adressee.
If I published the name and/or email address the person would know that I was the source.

Got this, among other e-mails form RTE.

    Hi Mick,
Just in case you didn't hear from Jim Booth, head of
promos, he contacted me to say that they're dropping
Lisa Simpson. Seemingly they've had a number of
complaints about her/it - so there.

    Cheers,
    Nina
