Guinness is nearly good enough for us

    With Guinness now being brewed everywhere from London to Nigeria nowadays the company is saying that the days are gone when the the bst pint of the stuff could be gotten in Ireland. This little story in the Independent today cheered me up!

    Guinness is nearly good enough for us

    THE landlord of an English pub has discovered that, try as he might, his punters feel Guinness is good for them, as good for them as possible - as long as they are drinking pints served in Ireland.

    Cork-born Aidan Mahon (33) got so fed up with drinkers complaining his pints weren't as good as Irish-served brew that he forked out £5,000 (€7,186) to fly his regulars to Dublin to prove his pint.

    His revellers agreed Guinness served in Aidan's bar in Norwich - brewed in London - was a good match. They still concluded, however, that the pints served in Ireland were a little more good for them. Aidan, licensee of Delaney's Bar, Norwich, decided to charter a plane to fly his regulars to Dublin. He also booked a hotel for a night of pints of plain. The regulars went on a bar crawl around the city, sampling as many pints of Guinness in as many bars as possible.

    Despite his expensive test, Aidan remained unconvinced Guinness is better in Ireland. "They say the reason it tastes different in England is because it's brewed with 'different' water."

    But aren't they closing down the brewery in London (Park Royal?) soon anyway, so it'll be a moot point.

    The 'Nigerian Guinness' referrred to in the article is quite different anyway. It's a bottled beer for a start, brewed, not with barley, but with sorghum and maize because barley is 'banned' for some obscure reason in Nigeria. It is very similar to the Guinness Foreign Export Stout one can get quite easily here (even Tesco's have it), but apparently has a quite disticntive taste. Another advantage is that it is very low in gluten, so coeliacs can drink it in moderation.
