I have been quoted 550 € (in Dublin) to replace the clutch on my 00 Seat Cordoba.
    Does this sounds right?

Also how often should this be replace (car is 55k mls )

    Thanks.

Opel Vectra Estate, Diesel - 65k miles no clutch problems.

I suppose it depends on the way you drive it.

110,000 on my '93 Sierra and no problems with the clutch apart from the cable of course. Not sure about the price you being quoted though.

I would look elsewhere for comparative prices (any seat specialists in Dublin?) €550 sounds a bit steep for any car!

Got the clutch replaced on an old Civic once, it was €500 off a main dealer. So I suppose €550 is not too bad if it's a main dealer. As far as I am aware it all depends on the work involved - some cars like the Corsa, etc, it's straightforward, but on some car's it can be difficult.

Realistically you will get it cheaper off a non-delaer or even off a dealer outside the county.

Head down the country, they are way cheaper. My Dad got a quote from a Ford main dealer in Dublin to replace the clutch on his Mondeo for €830(AFAIR). Another Ford Main Dealer in Kildare (only 30mins drive from Dublin) quoted a price just over €200!
Who wants to guess what garage got his business!

Thats too much - the clutch kit is €130 and then three or four hours labour. Shop around and avoid main dealers for this job.

My advice is phone German Parts in Bray, they stock any numbers of parts of all German and German derived model (like Seats) going back years. A clutch kit is about what 'ceptor says.

Ok, so the kit is about 130 + 4 hours labour.
What is the hourly rate that I can espect ?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 88,978 ✭✭✭✭mike65

I'd be thinking of about 50 euro an hour for labour. A main dealer will charge upwards of 80/90 euro per hour. Or am I out of touch?

    Mike.

you have to watch it, as some garages will use reconditioned clutches and still charge you 130 or more for full new parts. This is the also why small garages are much cheaper no mentioning mad dealer labour cost with +vat everything.

shop around, best you can do

anyway, my bro can do this with new parts for 330

Thats the number for german auto parts.. buy the clutch off them and get any mechanic to fit it!

I paid 700 for a clutch to be replaced at a main dealers before.. i've developed sense since though

    the question is:

Do you need the new clutch? Is there actually a problem? :D

I'd say you should go back to main dealer and demand some sort of warranty for it as it's only 4 yr old and small miles on it!

did you buy it private or dealer??

if no joy there I'd say I'd get the parts and do it and all for bout 200 or that!

can check out further if you're interested!

dealer won't ive a warranty on a clutch as it is something that wears anyway but even more so if the driver rides the clutch

The type of driving and the mechanical sympathy of the driver have a big influence on how long a clutch lasts. The weight and power of the vehicle would also be factors. Type of drivetrain (4wd etc.) might also be a factor

I have heard of a Peugeot 309 and a Renault 21 that were still on their original clutches at 400k miles  OTOH, some drivers go through a clutch every 20k or so.
