I'm 99.9% sure I know the answer to this question already. A mate of mine is convinced you do not need a phone line to subscribe to a DSL line (say UTV). Am I right in saying you do or have I missed something?

    You're right.

There are other wireless broadband options but DSL runs over your standard phone line.

And you are 99.9% +0.01% correct.

as above there are NON dsl broadband options out there

    NTL (Cable)
    IBB (Wireless)
    DigiWeb (Sat)
    etc....

Esat offer a ADSL service out of ~40 exchanges they unbundled where you can get ADSL down your phone line but all voice services are disconnected. You pay no ongoing line rental, just your monthly/quartlerly DSL subscription.

So yeah, it is possible, but it's not widely available.
