Questions for NTL subscribers...

    Hi All

Got a letter advertising NTL's broadband service is now available in Stillorgan. I'm thinking of ditching the landline and cancelling my IOLBB contract for their 1.5mb/s service @ €50/month.

I phoned their inquiries line and asked about caps, they said there was a 30gig/month cap (which is fine) and a 1gig/day cap (which is not). Does anyone know if that 1gig/day cap is actually enforced?

Also, does the default cable modem have an ethernet out jack so I can hook up my linksys wifi router?

Never has been for me :)
And yes, yes it has an ethernet connector.

I don't think the cap is enforced. If there is extensive downloads over the cap I'm sure something will happen.
The modem has ethernet and USB.
I have a Linksys WRT54G wireless router/access point hooked up to mine. No problems with it - don't forget to switch off SSID broadcast, enable security and restrict access by MAC address.

If you do decide to setup a wireless network, I'd tend to go with Linksys, a division of Cisco, who are probably the top dogs in networking. Cheap enough aswell. I have a Linksys Wireless PCI card WMP54G for sale here that enables your PC to be wirelessly networked. You'd also need a wireless router. I'd recommend the Linksys Wireless Router WRT54G.

Maybe they meant that 30 gigs a month translates to 1/gig a day... so that in the event of a month having more or less days than 30, you get a corresponding increase or decrease in cap.

Either way, i'd say you have no need to worry. A friend of mine has never had any problems pulling down a gig or two a day, but then again, he doesn't do that all the time. Don't worry about the "1 gig/day" limit, worry about the 30/month limit... and thats not even worth worrying too much about.

    Hey,

The cap is definitely not imposed, I moved from Eircom and haven't looked back, tech support is great and free too

It's more a fair usage policy than a cap. From what I have heard, if you constantly go over 30Gb each month you will eventually receive a letter asking you to stop. I don't know what would happen if you continued after that though.

    from http://www.ntl.com/locales/ie/en/athome/internet_faqs_technical.html#50

Are there any restrictions on the data that can be transferred?
The service is currently restricted to 1GB per day. This restriction will only be enforced where individual users consistantly exceed the 1GB per day limit.

Will there be any penalties incurred for high usage of the service?

No, there are no penalties for high usage. However, all usage is subject to ntl's user policy. Customers consistantly exceeding the daily limit will be contacted directly and service may be withdrawn.

I don't think the limit is that strictly enforced.
I downloaded HL2 over Steam last night without any problems, which was about 2 GB in total. In saying that, I don't download much each month so I don't even get close to the 30GB limit.

NTL + Wifi BB router is a great combo.
I've used both Linksys and Buffalo Wifi routers and they've worked flawlessly.

If you have a Mac, then the Airport Wifi stuff that Apple sell is made by Buffalo as far as I know.
