Yep Ad-Aware SE and Pc-Cillin 2002 both fully updated, Service pack 2 also.

Its not affecting the pc at all, just sitting on my desktop annoying me

Uh, that's quite worrying.... safe-mode is SUPPOSED to stop everything but the essentials running. This implies this file has embedded itself into a vital system process. I have something infesting my Idle process (no, not joking, and can't get rid of it) damn smacktard uses 100% of my Idle CPU, thus my computer is running hot all the time.

Use DOS! Oh wait, you're probably using XP, so you don't HAVE DOS. Oh well...
You could track it down by getting a Task Manager which tells you all the individual threads of your processes, and going through ALL of them one-by-one, closing each down until you can delete the file..... Good Luck with that.

Had a look through that, no security threats on my pc apparently.......

Kill EVERYTHING via task manager, still leaving task manager open.
Then start new task. Start cmd (DOS) then cd into the directory and delete the file. If it's on it's own do a DEL *.exe or whatever.

This worked for me before with some dodgy .avi files.

    Put in your XP CD.

    Boot off it.

    Start the Recovery Console.

Delete that bugger of a file.

If Xp turn of system Restore - Reboot into Safe mode and rename the file then delete it- if i can't delete something or virus scanner picked up dodgy file but can't delete it- system restore disable and safe mode - rename and delete it :o

One thing you could try would be to install eraser and set it up to erase the file after a reboot. I've found that this has worked on a number of occasions on locked files

Tried that and it worked first time :D

    Thanks for the help :)
