Napster - Is it illegal?

    There's a big debate going on at the moment on whether napster is illegal or not.In one way it isnt because they arent actually openly distributing mp3's themselves - and the more you think about the more the person who invented napster seems like a genius.Think about it - all they have is practically an irc server and they're making loads.What do ye're opinion on this?

    I think its legal. Its up to the end users whether they download copyrighted MP3s or not.

    I'm surprised I haven't heard sh1t hitting the fan over CuteMX - which allows you to exchange files of any type.

    Well metallica and dr dray (i Dunno) are sueing napster for trafficing in stolen goods. so make your own mind up i don't see how a group of college students in american are going to be able to pay.

    Maybe it is like Emulating old arcade games. You can download them legally if you have a copy of the game you are downloading. At least I think that is the system. It will be interesting to see if Metallica and Dr. Dre win their case against Napster. The internet is in the news alot these days. People getting ripped off on ebay and such.

    It isnt illegal.
    It doesnt traffic any files per se it only uploads list and you connect directly to the person to download the files from them.
    Anyway, there was a test case in the US when they released duel tape decks (which, lets face it has only one use: duplicate copywrighted tapes.

    the manufacturers won on the basis that it wasnt breaking the law even if their users were to man.

    Its like saying that bowie knife manufacturers are breaking the law because someone can stab someone else with them.

    This lawsuit is doomed and is an attempt to use the courts as a punitive measure in themselves (something illegal in this country but not in the US). Ie: I sue you just to cause you the pain of the lawsuit...

    It isn't illegal....for the love of god....like thinking like that...i could sue IE and netscape coz they allow access to bomb making information and kiddy porn?.....

    I'm going to sue SheroN for giving me the idea of going to a bomb making site and then I'm going to sue Metalica and Dr Dre for suing Napster and then I'm going to sue boards.ie for allowing me somewhere to waste my time and them I'm gonna... wink.gif

    Napster is not illegal. The creators can't be held responsible for what people do. End of story.
