PS2 Repair Question

I have a broken PS2 that keeps coming up with the red screen or "Disc Read Error" if you go through the browser. At first I thought that the I had a dirty or broken lens but then found out that it reads PS1 games fine. Also, after inserting a PS1 game and doing a soft reset it will then accept PS2 games but not DVDs - kind of like using Magic Swap.
I think its an issue involving the controller regulating the laser or some sort of verification chip but this is only speculation; I really have no experience with these. I'm thinking of just chipping it, but do mod chips piggyback on the same controller thats giving me problems or do they bypass it completely? I've googled to no avail - Any help would be appreciated.

Ur talking bout Swap Magic there, have you been playing dvdr game backups on it?also what model number or version is the console. Playing backup games puts more strain on the laser and will eventually wear out. Mine is currently being fixed for that reason by http://www.siyucom.com Chipping the console wont fix it either. You will probably need a new laser and after that I recommend using only high quality dvdr's like verbatim or anything with the Ritek g04 dye..

No, I was making a comparison that my problem was fixed by "authorising" my PS2 using a PS1 disc first and then soft resetting it and inserting a PS2 disc. That's why I though it was a problem with the laser controller or some sort of disc verification chip. The PS2 in question never used backups or a system like magicswap. I'm fairly sure I've identified the problem now btw - the height of the laser. See : http://arstechnica.com/articles/paedia/hardware/ps2.ars

okay..but if you need to adjust the laser height it is on its way out but should last you another while.
