Is the 6800GT an under clocked ultra? or is the Ultra an OC GT?

All 6800s are made off the same production line. And speed binned according to quality control. Eg. some cards have faulty pipes, they'll end up as 6800s. Some will not perform as well as Ultra spec cards, so they get binned as 6800GTs, and the ones where there are no major issues leave the line as 6800 Ultras.

Nvidia also liked to smarten their lineup with 6800 Ultra EEs, these are hand picked cards with the best quality components.

So yeah the 6800GT is an under clocked ultra, they both have 16 pipelines.

So how hard is it to OC a GT?

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,005 ✭✭✭CivilServant

Not very. Most will do Ultra speeds without too much trouble.

Ive a BFG 6800 GT OC Its stock speed is 370/1000, I have it running at 420/1100, with an Arctic Silencer 5, without the silencer it will run stable at 400/1100, I didnt flash the card or anything so it is basically an Ultra except that my PC still calls it a GT.

Ok this is what I thought, but you say you OC your card and that you got it stable at 400/1000, but some Ultras are been released with higher clock speed than that, so my question is how much more will you get out of the ultra’s, is this its limit without specialized cooling or can it be OC to maybe ~550/~1400? Where as the GT’s couldn’t.

The highest stock most of the ultras go to is 450, and theyare around €600-€700, I dont know if they would go to 550, the only thing i could imagine helping is the second molex connector and better standard cooling?, Id prefer to spend €310 on a decent GT, and €30 on a better cooler (like i did) and you basically have a Ultra running 420/1100.

€310 is a great price if you can get it. Cheapest on komplett is €460.

BFG 6800 GT OC The picture on that site is out of date, the card you receive is a much nicer/newer looking card.

I got mine from the states, $406 is €308 at current rates, standard delivery is about $20, I forked out $60 to have it 48hours later (HL2!)

Fedex delivered it and I wasnt asked for Duty (I got it delivered at work)

I OC'd my card for a while to 470/1200 it was very stable, i got 5,112 in 3dmark05 (up from 4,636 at stock) and a few more frames in doom 3 ''51.2fps'' at ultra extreme quality(mod) 1600x1200

sounds dead on CC, mine gets 4735 at 400/1100 and 5K at 425/1.18 - I can't seem to get it back to 425/1.2 since I moved to nf3 from nf2, then again, I might just need to give it a cleaning, something has slowed down the max oc I can get out of my gfx card since the upgrade, it's buggin me

For HL2 go into console and type "cl_showfps 1"

    I don't know the command for doom3.
