    Received today from messrs ntl

    MEDIA RELEASE
    25th November 2004

ntl Ireland & ESB Telecom in new Agreement

    * Agreement paves way for roll-out of ntl Broadband to Galway &
    Waterford
    * Added benefits for domestic & business customers

ntl Ireland and ESB Telecom announced today that they have concluded an
agreement that extends the reach of ntl Ireland's network. Using ESBT's
recently completed national fibre optic network, ntl will be able to
provide a full range of services and Internet access to Irish consumers
    and businesses.

Under the agreement ESB Telecoms will supply high quality bandwidth
services between major nodes on its network to ntl. This bandwidth will
provide ntl with additional network resources required to enable roll-out
of broadband to other parts of ntl's network areas.

During Q3, 2004, ntl Ireland commenced an investment programme to enable
its network to deliver broadband services to consumers and now has over
66,500 homes marketable for broadband. Today reinforces that commitment
to the Irish marketplace and will support ntl in its drive to deliver
broadband services to the rest of its network.

John McSweeney, General Manager of ESB Telecoms said: "This agreement is a
further step towards broadening the distribution of broadband and digital
TV services in Ireland. We are delighted to support ntl Ireland in their
drive to roll-out broadband and business services to other regions in
Ireland and we look forward to a productive and successful working
    relationship."

Commenting on the partnership, Graham Sutherland, Managing Director of ntl
Ireland added: "It is critical for Ireland to have a world-class ICT
infrastructure. We at ntl Ireland have made a commitment to the Irish
marketplace and today's agreement adds further momentum to our broadband
expansion programme, which will deliver new services to our domestic and
business customers. This move also supports the government's desire to
roll out broadband to the regions and ntl is determined to be a major
    player in all such initiatives."

    -ENDS-

    John

Every bit helps, and consumers in Waterford and Galway can look forward to choice and competition.

And while I am at it, well done to ntl for ensuring we got their press release.

Having a quick peak at NTL's broadband offerings I notice the price has dropped by about €5 since I last looked. What's the story with 300K down/64K up though? Half a broadband connection?

I would have thought with a cable into a house they could offer 5M up/ 5M down sort of products. Seems like a bit of waste of effort to deploy a Ireland wide optical fibre network and then the best you can get from it is 1500K down/ 256K up. For someone like me wanting to use their BB connection for VoIP 256K up at 17:1 contention is not going to cut it let alone 64K!

    Surely VoIP works over 256kbps?

I don't really understand the limited upload speeds either. I can understand that Eircom are doing it to protect their leased line rip-off, but what's the deal with the other providers? I presume it's to prevent people from providing services on the network or something, but even then it's a bit hard to understand what the big deal is.

Shame you have to subscribe to their piss poor basic TV service in order to get the broadband service.

Awk, anyone know if they have *any* plans for North Dublin?

Have we been forgotten about? I can't even get NTL digital....

No wireless providers on this side either. :(

North Dublin was the first or second place in Ireland to get BB of any sort. Malahide and Swords in 1997, Cable BB too.

North Dublin was the first place on the planet to lose all BB service for 4 years until DSL became available.

Chorus bought the Cable provider and shut down the BB ....Chorus still owns the cable in North Dublin , ask them when they intend to turn it on.

They had started giving out broadband as early as 1997!? Didnt realise that at all.

    Muck,
Thanks for that. NTL own our cable (Portmarnock). Even my basic cable is crap.
Complaint after complaint and still nothing has changed. (don't want to go with Sky)

Ah well.... hopefully cable BB will arrive here one day :)

Actually can work well over 13Kbps or even 9Kbps uncontended. I have a 512Kbps connection that allows usable VoIP at most times except on week nights when everyone else is on the internet as well and my ISP's internet link is maxed out. Unfortunately this is the time when I make phone calls.

I'd prefer quality of service on my connection but as that doesn't look like happening in the forseeable future I figure a 5 or 10 meg pipe in the form of a cable broadband connection would have a better chance of getting a 13Kbps stream out.

    Dreaming :) .

Excuse my ignorance but are any of NTL's broadband services available in the Drumcondra, Santry area of Dublin.
