I install the game, apply patch v1.03, run the game, and black screen comes up and goes away and I find myself on the desktop again, the game won't run

I thought I had to apply all patches step by step, so I started with 1.01, 1.02, 1.03, still doesn't work

    What am I doing wrong?

    NO !!!!

You just need the 1.03 patch. The 1.01 patch had serious problems with it so was recalled by EA and replaced by the 1.02 patch. While they were server-side errors mostly, you'll still get a better install with just the 1.03 patch on it's own.

You need to have 2Gb free on C/ and you need to install the game with the same Xp login as you used to install BF2.

A lot of peole had these Crast To Desktop problems after applying the 1.03 patch and some fixed it by going to default profile /my docs/BF2/profile/0001, open video.con, and change system resolution and every other setting to very low such as 800 x 600 at 60 hz and video settings set to low.

Can you copy and paste the patchlog.txt file from /my docs/BF2/dmp/ here please?

I've checked video.con like you suggested and and they are already set low, but no go :(
    VideoSettings.setTerrainQuality 2
    VideoSettings.setGeometryQuality 2
    VideoSettings.setLightingQuality 2
    VideoSettings.setDynamicLightingQuality 2
    VideoSettings.setDynamicShadowsQuality 2
    VideoSettings.setEffectsQuality 2
    VideoSettings.setTextureQuality 3
    VideoSettings.setTextureFilteringQuality 2
    VideoSettings.setResolution 800x600@60Hz
    VideoSettings.setAntialiasing Off
    VideoSettings.setViewDistanceScale 0.9
    VideoSettings.setVideoOptionScheme 1

and I've attached a log Ponster, it was way too big to quote it in the post.

Safe bet would be to re-install the game and get the patch from somewhere else and try again.

Having the same problem here. It was all working fine, reinstalled xp, reinstalled game, patched to 1.03 and updated PB and now it CTDs every time I'm loading a map after connecting to a server.

    Bleurgh.

K guys I've found my problem, I was using an old no-cd patch.... bah

Thanks for your suggestions though :)

Yep. It was all in the patchlog file you attached :)

Applying HISTORY File Patch for 'BF2.exe'

warning wpt0036: Old File not found. However, a file of the same name was found. No update done since file contents do not match.

You can never patch a game if using a no-cd patch.

We aren't talking about warez and no direct links were given.

Make a mini-image which you are legally able to do and you won't have to use the DVD to run the game.

That fixed it for me.. I wasn't rebooting after patching up which was causing the problems.

    Cheers :)
