UCDSU will be orgasmic about this latest piece of news:
UCD staff represented by SIPTU have mounted a demonstration outside the university today to protest at cost-cutting plans.

The union says seven catering workers are being made redundant in a situation similar to that at Irish Ferries.

It claims the seven have been told to take up a redundancy offer by November 18 or accept new "flexible" working conditions.

SIPTU says the move is unjustified given the unlimited money that appears to be available to pay the huge salaries of UCD's seven vice-presidents.

Fair play to SiPTU for tackliing this issue - it's their job after all - but how long will it be for the UCDSU hacks jump on this issue and stick their noses in as well I wonder?

The posters around college would be a start. Its got to do with the restructuring and rebranding of the restaraunt

I haven't been to college in about a week so you can understand my failure to notice these posters!

I say order in seven super-microwaves, buy prepared meals like you get in canteens where they sell edible food in bulk, and sell them in take-away trays. You pop it in a micro for a minute, mmhm, hot dinner, no need for restaurant staff who seem to have been sucking lemons.

    lemons infected by SARS!

Seriously though, none of us actually know whats going on. May be the college is just being cruel and laying off staff for no reason or.......
Maybe, just maybe, the college looked at the numbers, considered their options and looked at the food and made the tough decisions.
People do get laid off for legitimate reasons, people need to realise this. Obviously i feel for those losing their jobs but luckily we live in an Ireland with lots of jobs.

altho Kudos on the Pizza idea....the college has been listening to you Blush_01!!

I blame the SU for opening up so many food outlets. When I started here there was only the restaurant. Now, in the name of choice, we can buy sausages and chips in several different place.

True, sausages and chips can be found in manys a place now but how can everywhere else produce much nicer food for the same price? The bar food is quite good! Sock it to The Man!

I agree, it's absolutely disgraceful. Allah rain down curses upon these selfish Union hacks who never do anything for the poor students.

    Oh no, wait a second...

P.S. Are John C and myself the only people on this Forum who don't have a problem with the UCDSU?

No. I have a few problems with the SU myself. I'm not entirely convinced that they were innocent of the sports bar closure but that's another row for another day.

I really, really disagree that the academic staff's action last Thursday has no relevance to students.

At the Open Meeting held in the Science block on lunchtime that day, one member of academic staff stood up and said that due to Brady's new emphasis on research and corporate involvement, it was more in her the interests of her career to teach her first year classes badly so that less students would be choosing her elective in second year, then to teach her second year classes even worse so no third year students would come knocking at her door the next year. Then she could spend all her time on research and do the best she could for her own career (note, this isn't what she wants to do, it was just the result of the march Brady has put on this university).

If lecturers are beginning to think along those lines, then how on earth is it not in our interests to be involved in the issue?

I have no problems with this years SU cause their less in my face about things that and the ents is actually half decent this year. As for the whole issue of things away from my entertainment the thing about lecturers saying teaching badly would work out better for them-that sucks balls on the unis part! What a jip!

yes this IS an issue the SU should be involved in, not deportation or ferries. Brady commercialised the university on a big scale last summer, along with modularisation and branding. he made so many changes that anybody who objects to them would find it hard to know where to start.

The issue was covered on the Six-One news: you can have a peak here - it explains some of what is happening - it's not all about the restaurant workers though. BTW You'll need Real Player to view it.;)

One would think with such strong emphasis on research, it would be in said lecturers interest to acquire as many post-grads as possible to do the research...

brady is more interested in getting us into 'Top of the Pops' so educating some measly undergrad who may decide to feck off to TCD, MIT or Azerbijan University is not worth his while to get into 2006 top 20.

Just repeating what I heard. There were about 300 academic staff there who were seriously, seriously pissed off with Brady and the university administration...and if our lecturers are that pissed off then I reckon we have something to worry about.
