esat BT gaming problems

    Hi,
We have esat BT broadband here in Limerick, and use it mostly for gaming (2 PC's in the house)
However, we have a severe problem when gaming on digitalservers.co.uk servers
Sometimes the ping/latency is ok, but often the link is very laggy, or even drops off complely for a few minutes at a time.
When it drops, it is only the upstream data that is lost - downstream game data continues to flow.
We have analysed the data traffice, and we are not saturating the connection. The game data is only 1.5kbit up, and ~8Kbit down fro each machine, and the 128Kbit/1Mbit DSL should be easily able to handle that.
Other uk servers, and/or european servers are generally ok.

I have done a tracert to a digitalserver server:
Tracing route to 83.142.49.44 over a maximum of 30 hops

    1 <1 ms <1 ms <1 ms 192.168.1.1
    2 52 ms * 75 ms bas502.cwt.esat.net [193.95.136.238]
    3 48 ms 55 ms 47 ms vlan501.rt502.cwt.esat.net [193.95.137.125]
    4 49 ms 39 ms 44 ms vlan52.rt001.cwt.esat.net [193.95.130.145]
    5 48 ms 47 ms 50 ms ge0-0.br001.cwt.esat.net [193.95.129.4]
    6 54 ms 56 ms 63 ms 213.242.106.133
    7 62 ms 66 ms 69 ms so-4-1-0.bbr2.London1.Level3.net [4.68.128.117]

    8 73 ms 145 ms * ae-0-12.gar2.London1.Level3.net [212.187.131.48]

    9 59 ms 63 ms 61 ms so-6-0.metro1-londencyh00.London1.Level3.net [21

    10 63 ms 63 ms 64 ms 195.50.81.66
    11 69 ms 107 ms 68 ms 83.142.49.44

    Trace complete.

And here is a link to JOLT:
Tracing route to 82.133.85.21 over a maximum of 30 hops

    1 <1 ms <1 ms <1 ms 192.168.1.1
    2 47 ms 50 ms 83 ms bas502.cwt.esat.net [193.95.136.238]
    3 52 ms 54 ms 51 ms vlan500.rt502.cwt.esat.net [193.95.136.125]
    4 50 ms 47 ms 49 ms vlan52.rt001.cwt.esat.net [193.95.130.145]
    5 56 ms 58 ms 84 ms ge0-0.core001.cwt.esat.net [193.95.129.1]
    6 67 ms 65 ms 71 ms pos2-0.br001.ldn.esat.net [193.95.131.14]
    7 71 ms 66 ms 66 ms lon1-9.nildram.net [195.66.224.59]
    8 64 ms 66 ms 66 ms jolt-gw.nildram.net [195.149.20.214]
    9 68 ms 64 ms 62 ms 82.133.85.21

    Trace complete.

From this, it appears that ESAT is routing traffic to jolt (and to europe) via LINX in london

But traffic to digitalservers is routed via level3 - which sucks.

Could somebody else with Esat elsewhere in the country try the above traceroute and see if is just a limerick problem?
Also, could somebody with eircom DSL also try the same to see if it is just an esat issue, so I can threaten them with loosing a customer if they don't update their routing tables?

    thanks,
    Zardor & Zardette.

i had a similar problem with online gaming , and when i went to bt about it al they said after they checked everything out was that once you leave their network to whatever server your playing on its out of their hands as you are on your own once you leave their network ,its not their responseability, they can only look after the network in ireland , i was geting pings as high as 300/450 or higher to europe and as high as 120 to the uk and forget the usa ,500 + , . if they cant sort it out for you ,your stuck till you use another isp, but they are all basiclly the same , good luck ,you will need it.. also i'm in westmeath
