For people who dont have cubase or pro tools or any proper recording tools and want to contribute to the projects these programs should allow anybody with just a guitar, a computer and a cable to do so:

    Kristal Audio Engine

    16 audio tracks
32 Bit floating point audio engine
44.1 to 192 kHz sample rate
    3-band parametric EQ &
2 VST insert slots per channel
    3 VST master effect slots
ASIO low latency audio driver support
    4 KRISTAL PlugIn slots

    GuitarFX Demo

Turns computer into an effects processor

    Fretted Synth Amp Simulators

    Free Amp Sims

    Audacity

    The Free, Cross-Platform Sound Editor/Recorder.

    Guitar Suite

SimulAnalog guitar suite is a set of vst plugin that simulates some of the most common guitar amplifiers and analog processors. Its most important feature is the extremely high precision of the simulation, which is almost indistinguishable from the original sound. Boss DS-1 (Distortion stompbox) - Boss SD-1 (Super Overdrive stompbox) - Tube Screamer (Overdrive stompbox) - Oberheim PS-1 (Phaser stompbox) - Univox Univibe (Modulations stompbox) - Fender Twin 1969 (Guitar amplifier) - Marshall JCM900 Dual Reverb (Guitar amplifier).

If thats what I had ages ago its very very good (im gonna test it now)
    Edit: It is savage!

    Dektop Tuner/Metronome

    4Front Vsti's

    Very high quality free vsti's

No probs, im still looking for a savage freeware vst marshall amp sim I had ages ago (if I can find it on an old backup CD ill host it myself).

Edit: Got it, posted in first post.

Edit: Just installed Kristal and Guitar Suite, quite impressed,Check It, just a simple riff recorded straight into the soundcard played first clean, second with the JCM900 vst, third with the Univibe, and fourth with the phaser! (Yes I know have the JCM gain and vol too high :p)

Ideally for myself I would like to use a Hosa Snake into a Multitrack Soundcard into a multitrack sequencer. The above method would let you record each mic into a seperate track in the seqeuncer, which I find is a must when it comes to drums. There are other methods but cost wise I think this is the best (depending on your mics you can get a very pro result from this)

If i was gonna get some PC recording hardware without changing my soundcard, would this do?

That will only connect to a vinyl record player, the purpose being to rip vinyl to mp3 or cd. If its an instrument you are trying to record through USB you could do worse than this, or if you have a bit more money this is supposed to be savage!

Bear in mind theres a limited bandwidth through USB, which may or may not be a problem, depending on what you plan doing (probable not). If you have a firewire connection you could always get this! Also be on the lookout for cheap M-Boxes, now that the M-Box 2 is out the originals have dropped in price dramatically and is a cheap route into a pro tools system.

For great prices check out Turnkey.

Also for anyone not living in Dublin there are a few places in Cork and Limerick that are reasonable price wise eg Arc Enterprise (mac store) in Cork

Another alternative is to switch to a GNU/Linux operating system which is customized for audio/music production, such as DeMuDi/ANGULA.

DeMuDi is a Debian GNU/Linux distribution customized for audio/sound production. It's kernel has been customized for low-latency audio, and it comes with lots of excellent free audio software pre-installed => list here.

It has more software than I think I could ever use, and I reckon I've saved myself a few thousand euro since I switched to GNU/Linux. Plus, installing DeMuDi really isn't much more difficult (..if at all) than installing Windows - it's quite straightforward really.

Sound & MIDI software for Linux is also an excellent resource.

I might start a thread on Free Audio Software some time.

Here is a handy issue of pcmusician that has a review of many freeware and/or shareware recording resources and has links to where to find them:
