PC World have a 256mb Geforce 6200 with free copy of Far Cry for about 80 quid. Is the card any good, does anyone know, and what would it compare to?

It'll run Doom3 type stuff with everything turned down to low. I 3D05marked a 64MB turbocache 6200on a winny 3000+ with 1GB DDR400. It got nearly the same result as an FX5900 standard I'd tested with a 3.2Prescott, but FX cards are pretty weak in 3D05, so in real world the FX5900 will beat it by a good bit. For around €60 it is ok though, much better than its predecessor the FX5200 *shudders*

I already have a 256mb x800, but I have a friend who's still struggling along with an agp 128mb fx5200.....yes, shock horror, so I was wondering what he could upgrade to cheaply in order to play newer games a tad better....

    256mb 6200 sounds SO much better then 128mb 5200....ah well. :)

He has a Dell PC so the PSU isn't going to take a beast of a card so have to aim low :v:

His pc is still 3ghz though so it would be a waste to eh....waste that processing power on such a poor card.

Mobi I think you are misreading me. I said the 6200 came close to the performance of a standard (ie. non. ultra) FX5900,thats the high end of the FX cards, not a low end FX5200. 3D05 is not the be all end all, but tis a fair enough gauge of DX9 performance whcih is what most modern games use. The FX series had very bad DX9 abilities, and the 5200 is the biggest pile of s*** of all.
The 9600Pro or XT (2nd hand around €50-60) would be a possibilty to consider as well if power supply is an issue, you may even be able to use a 6600non-GT (I think the 6200 is supposedly just a cutdown version of the 6600 core)
