There was a post here a year ago.[Which I cant find anymore] About the possibility of upgrading your rifle if it was 22 to a higher 22 calibre without having to apply for a new liscense.IE 22LR to 220 or higher.
Can anyone remind me of this procedure?Did it apply from 22lr up to 220 Swift or higher?
Or does it apply only to sub groups of 22 calibres?IE 22lr up to22 Hornet?220 swift up to 270?
    Thanks

Its up to the local FAO afaik. Some even went form .22 to .223. Go in tell the FAO you want to change one rifle for another and see what they say.

And does your licence actually say .22lr? Mine, probably because of a programming whoopsie in PULSE, has me listed for a .220...

It has said pre and post PULSE .220 inches.Gave up years ago trying to explain the difference to the Gardai years ago.

I have never seen a licence (and I've seen quite a few) with anything on it other than the numerical part of the nominal calibre.
For example, I have access to licences for .22LR, .22 Hornet, and .220 Swift rifles. They all note the calibre as .220 inches.
.223 Rem licences I've seen merely state .223 inches.

It certainly appears that the PULSE system uses whatever's stamped into the barrel, rounded up to 3 figures with a zero.

Of course, we all know that the numbers stamped in the barrel often aren't the actual calibre (see this thread for more detail-
http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=317346), which gives rise to the old anomaly of the .220 Swift being historically as easy to licence as the .22LR. This may have changed recently, anybody know?

From the computer engineering point of view, I'm guessing that the PULSE system treats calibres and serial numbers as numbers, rather than text strings. Hence, .22 = .220 (the number is stored as a three-place decimal) and hence the dropping of leading zeros on serial numbers.
    *sigh*
Another example of a case where a little technical consultation would have been a good idea...

9mm parabellum goes into PULSE as "9.0mm", apparently.

This ,220 inches thing has been going on even before the PULSE was ever mooted of.Just the usual SNAFU when it comes to Irish firearms liscensing.

    CG,

I upgraded from a Hornet to a .223 during the year & had no probs with the local Garda. I went to my dealer gave him my Hornet, he gave me the paperwork for the .223, I took it back to my local cop shop, they altered the Hornet licence with the new serial number & calibre, stamped it & signed their name to it. 1 hour later I was zeroing in my span new .223. No monies exchanged, when I went to renew my licence in July it was already altered to the .223.

Word of warning though, in some parts of the country the Garda seem to have different rules, I have heard of some people having to reapply for the new licence all over again taking up to and above a month.

    All the best

is there any law about this that allows them to just change the licence that i could point out to them if they do decide to go down the new licence road

    so far this applies to

basically anything .22 (standard, magnum, hornet, swift) and the odd .223 what about 22/250

The .22-250 is a bit unfortunate in that it is (or at least, it was) the Wildlife Service's minimum requirement for deer hunting. It's therefore regarded in Garda Stations as a specialised powerful calibre suitable only for deer hunting or formal target shooting.

The reality that it's only marginally different to the .220 Swift (indeed, it's slightly less powerful) is immaterial.
It's officially a deer hunting calibre and the Swift is only an ordinary .22, and as far as the Super is concerned, that's all he needs to know.
