Has anyone ever heard of this been done? I heard from someone that there is a process to convert alluminium single glazing to double glazing, has anyone any experience with this? What kind of costs are involved etc?
    Cheers!

    Hi,

A lot depends on the type of / size of frame used and the external beading that holds the glazing in place.

Some can be upgraded to double glazing as far as I know the new glazing not the fairly standard 20 mm but smaller and the beading must be replaced.

It can be easier to upgrade teak or other types of timber because the sash can be routed out to accept the new glazing.

Local Golden Pages should provide some better info possibly in Windows repairs and maintenance.

aluminium are better off replaced with pvc because the double glaze units are 24mm ,the air space between glass will be wider thus better noise and cold insulater.
aluminium frames collect condensation because they get as cold as outside, pvc doesnt.
if the windows u have are old the hinges and handles are probably near failing especially if not oiled regularly, imho u should replace them.

It will depend on the particular type of window system used. A lot of window companies are shy about upgrades - they consider replacements more worthwhile. With opening panels, the extra weight of glass may be too much in some cases.

You can get aluminium windows which have "thermal breaks" which prevents a cold bridge forming. uPVC isn't very recyclable whereas tiember and aluminium are.

Don't use oil, use carbon. Oil attracts dirt and dust.
