The Roy Keane Transfer Thread

Im setting this up because it will require it's own thread.

After the not un-suprising exit of Keane from Man U, the flood of transfer rumours will be enourmous.

so people where do u think he will head to?

IMHO i think he will head to Scotland and Celtic, based on what he has hinted before regarding his disere to play for his boyhod hereos.

Keane will have a real reluctance to head abroad due to the fact he will not want to up root his family!

but then again a move to Real Madrid would not suprise me one bit!

It looks like Celtic to be honest. I dont think he will move abroad as you said, so Celtic would make sense. Unless he came back for Cork City tomorrow night, :D

Celtic I say...wonder will he be at the Celtic-Rangers game this weekend?? has been known to show up to these games!

It was runoured a couple of weeks ago on some man utd forum that he might be heading to everton as a player/coach role to learn his trade of eventually becoming a manager but i dont believe that.

    Best bet would be Celtic

Like I said in the original thread, I have little if any respect for Keane. However, if he were to do the decent thing and join Cork City, this would all change. Keane's experience and knowledge could propel Cork to the Champions League proper. As a multi-millionare he has no more need for money from the game, it would be the decent thing to do something to help the domestic game.

he is too big a fish to stay in that enviroment though

I;m not so sure. Yes, he is still a tallented footballer but his legs have gone - he's no longer the box to box player he was during his heyday.

    Madrid or Juventus

New central midfield partnership with Vieira then I suppose. :D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,638 ✭✭✭Iago

Well Juventus came in for him before and on a free transfer it has to be worth a go to see him play with Viera.

Only issue is that they already have Viera, Nedved, Zambrotta...3-4-1-2 with Keane playing in the centre with Viera and Nedved behind the front 2 maybe

Madrid? where would they play him....already have loads of midfield players....would have taken a few season ago but not now

Juve: Emerson, Vieiri, Nedved and (dont know) that aint a bad midfield

I mentioned this on the other thread but I can't believe that he'd uproot his young family to move to Spain considering he doesn't need the money.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,894 ✭✭✭Nunu

Bayern Munich have long been admirers and even at this stage of his career would still be interested. He could be a Lothar Matthaeus type figure who was at the club in his mid to late 30's. But, as said already would Keane move abroad with a young family. In my mind it would be a great move for professional reasons.

Pompy have officially enquired about his availability.
Cant see him going there, or abroad.
Player / coach role in Celtic looks the obvious bet.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,958 ✭✭✭✭RuggieBear

Strachan won't want him anywhere near Celtic...

I reckon he should go back to Cobh or just retire gracefully

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,553 ✭✭✭✭Dempsey

Celtic is his choice. Celtic just have to offer him a contract, but will they? What does keane expect to be paid by Celtic? Will Celtic give him a "take it of leave it" offer. Hmmm

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 992 ✭✭✭mchurl

surely celtic il offer him deal he would be the best player up there by far

Portsmouth have become the first club to publically declare their interest in signing Roy Keane, who has left Manchester United.

The 34-year-old midfielder has left United by mutual consent after 12-and-a-half years at Old Trafford.

And Pompey chairman Milan Mandaric has quickly targeted Keane as the type of player who could help the struggling Barclays Premiership club out of relegation danger.

A statement from the club read: "Following instruction from Portsmouth chairman Milan Mandaric, the club's chief executive Peter Storrie is making enquiries about the availability of former Manchester United player Roy Keane.

"Mandaric believes Keane is exactly the kind of positive character Portsmouth Football Club would welcome.

aparently keane wont be joining another premiership club. He has been one of the greatest players ever to play in the premiership.

a liverpool fan said this morning on the radio he was heading for liverpool.....but maybe that was just wishful thinking from the supporter, hehe :)

I'd love to see it and seeing has he has now left Utd it would be perfect timing. I know he has not managed but I reckon he knows as much about the game than any Keegan , Venables etc, and he would motivate the players.

Only thing is how would he get on with that model of incompedence the FAI, they'd drive him to drink !!!!!

Keane won't play for another premiership club and I can't see him either taken his kids out of school and to a foreign country or leaving his kids in England while he plays in a foreign country. For me its either Celtic, Eircom League or retirement. I think if Celtic want him then thats where he's going.

    Celtic statement:
ROY Keane’s sudden departure from Manchester United today has sparked speculation in the media and amongst supporters linking him with a possible move to Celtic, given the player’s previously quoted desire to one day play for the club.

Responding to the speculation, a Celtic spokesperson said: "Roy Keane was a magnificent player and servant for Manchester United but he also knows all about Celtic. If at any time Roy would like to speak to us about his future and Celtic's, we would be only too happy to speak to him, but as yet there have been no discussions."

heard rumours of him being in wigan last week (on the guise of going to a rugby league game)...so dont be surprised if he turns up as player coach for wigan in the near future!!

As a staunch Celtic fan i truly hope a legend like Keano signs for us,although he should not be handed the captains armband, ive long admired Keane, players like him are few and far between in Football thesedsays.

Roy Keane plays with his heart on his sleeve, unlike other professionals who only seem to be worried about their pay packet and what car they are driving Keano cares deeply about his football, his passion and commitment to the game is to be admired greatly,he was IMO at one time the best midfielder in the world up there with Zidane and Figo, some of his majestic performances for United and Ireland in the past have been breathtaking.

I must say this came as a total shock to me i had a feeling he might leave at the end of the season but not just like that.

Gordon Strachan should get the ball rolling and hold talks with Keane's agent regarding a deal to bring him to Paradise where he has always wanted to come,he would be a firm favourite with the fans, and im sure he would be a success with us..HAIL KEANO :D

I would never waych an Ireland game for as long as Keane was manager. I wish him all he best in his playing career but if we took on Keane with no management experience and the bad feeling that is still around I cannot see him ding anything but harm to the national team and the feeling around it.

Fair play if he gets a job playing elsewhere, if he went to Cork then I think that he would not do well as the players just aren't up to standard and he will not be as good with people around him who are not as competent as he.

I do not care if he went to Celtic or Real but as he is cup tied I cannot see Real taking him on, look what happened to Gravesen when he went there. His memorabilia will now be worth a few more quid.

I too do not think Keane would be good as Ireland manager not yet anyway

Keane said he'd never play for another club in the premiership other than united. If he does join another club in the prem its as a coach and nothing more.

I can't see strachen and him getting on, they are too alike so imo that rules out celtic.

I reckon its italy. He can leave the kids where they are for 1 and a half seasons while he earns a nice little lumpsum. The italian game would suit him perfect. He'd dominate.

Only other option is Byern. With Ballack gone they'll need a replacement and they don't come more experienced than Keane. Cup tied yes but he could do them a job in the league. ALso it would give them breathing space to find a more longterm replacement for ballack. (ps: 40 - 1 at the minute.....good bet)

I don't know why this is even up for debate. Keane has stated he'll never play for another Premier League club and that he wants to finish his career with Celtic. Quite frankly, Celtic will be dying to get Keane on their books. He'd be just the trick to tighten up a Celtic defence.

Celtic have said they would like to halve talks with keane but i'm not sure if there is anything official about that.

I'd love him to come to Liverpool. I think Gerrard could learn a LOT from him. If he's staying in the PL and doesnt go to Liverpool, I think he should go to Wigan (and keep them above Utdfor the season)

Not sure if Strachan would want two central midfielders in their mid-30s though.

Strachan would be a fool not to want Keane in the SPL. He still looked the part in the Premiership this season, he would be a class above (as he used to be in the premiership) in scotland for another couple of yrs. 18 months anyway.

I'd say everyone at celtic wants keane. Also, i'd say the money men are licking their lips at the prospect of everone in ireland with a celtic jersey and keane on the back.

when i was on a tour of blackburn rovers a good few years ago, the guide told a story of how keane had agreed to sign for blackburn before joining united from forest that time - they had held discussions with him, he was impressed by the facilities etc and everything else and he was due to return the next day to sign the contract - the next day united contacted him and the next 12 years is history -

would love to see him join blackburn now - although its impossible (if only adidas made our kit).......

so i suppose im just warning whoever is trying to sign him - to have the contract there and then and dont hang around :D

He tells the story himself on this http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/B00006RHV2/202-4576950-3280669

He said he'd agreed late on friday, so the offices and admin staff were gone till monday so Kenny and him agreed to sort it monday morning. Fergie rang him on the sunday and said not to sign anything with Blackburn. End result: Keane has a bag full of medals, Shearer has 1.:)

cool link thanks......even though im a blackburn fan shearer was a fool to turn down united the 2nd time (i.e. the move to newcastle)...he could have won so much - and united so much more!

According to reports this morning Keane has been offered an €11 million contract by Juventus. I think that would be a bad move for Keane, with Vieira and Emerson already at Juve.

  • Moderators, Arts Moderators Posts: 35,509 Mod ✭✭✭✭pickarooney

Can't understand why Juve would want him. Vieira and Emerson have been fantastic this season, and there's surely no place for a third defensive-minded midfielder in there.
