Whoever that "firearms specialist"was[I assume Garda forensic.Had dosed off during the earlier part of the show].He needs a course in weapons history and identification.

1]The Egyptians never made the UZI.Isreal and South Africa are the only two countries that ever made the UZI,apart from an unliscensed version in Croatia in the 90s.Nor was it ever called the "Port Said",He got it mixed up with the Carl Gustav SMG of Irish army fame.AKA the Swedish K

2] Never mentioned where Glocks are made,or the correct mag capacity[17 shot] not 10[US "crime bill"restriction.Never applied over here in Europe]

3]Stated that the Browning Hi power was first built in the 1920s.It first apperead in 1935.Hence the designation P35[pistolet 1935]

4]Stated that sawn off shotguns are more leathl the shorter they are,or words to that effect. The shorther the barrel also reduces your range,so unless the barrel is rechoked you will have a huge pellet spread,BUT that also gives the target a chance of not being hit fatally either, especially if it is standard, bird size shot.So you might have a sure killer weapon, but you need to shoot somone with it at the inside of a phone box range.

Rest of the discussion, half assed, going nowhere fast.

I think FN in Belgium built them too.

Ooops!Forgot about them as well:o .As such did they produce them as a line product or was it a special order to fill some countries demand for them???
As FN also does AR15s as well, they usually have somthing like "made under liscense by FN,"on their recivers.Anyone enlighten us?

Apart from the puzzlingly un-expert 'expert,' I liked the way they clumsily pronounced that all the guns on display were de-activated.
Don't want another 'Willie the Kid' moment :D

OK, the expert is an RFD. Would you really prefer if he said the true capacity of the pistols, causing even more public concern? Does he really need to factually inform Joe Public of every detail of country of origin? He stated that the shotgun was easier to conceal and the spread of the shot would be greater at close range i.e. a living room. Overall he did a better job than the guy(s) on Liveline earlier in the week by not raising the hysteria level. It was also suggested to him to be careful of getting drawn in to the "all guns are nasty" area and I think he did it well by not tying in sporting weapons. Way better than Duffy's show.

An RFD with deactivated full auto and criminally modified weapons??????The mind boggles.
As a matter of fact I would prefer if the man was truthful, and it would show that he was knowledgeable in his field..Some pretty basic knowledge stuff there BTW.
It is about high time Joe Public got the facts about firearms and the truth starts in details. Why did he not mention then that the shorter you cut the barrels of a shotgun the more "up close and personal" to point blank range a killing weapon it becomes? The further you can get away from one of these the better chances you have of living would have been a good pointer to mention.
Even more scary that an RFD[was it he mentiond he was one?] plonks such illegal stuff on a table on prime time TV and then Joe Public thinks anyone can walk in to a gun shop and possibly "buy" this stuff over a counter.Got to ask yourself where did he get this stuff too??If I was his Super I would be having a quiet word about his shop contents.
If the all guns are nasty type of arguement came up he should be well able to handle that by pointing out that three of the guns are illegal here and criminally modified, and that they are not available to the GP under any circumstancesnor that they are sporting weapons.
How did the liveline guys[me included ] raise the hysteria level??I thought the whole thing from the word go a farce, that was more concerned with" Willie bashing"[ooer:D ] than gun availability issues.
NOT,I was contacted by them not viseversa, and I offered the reseacher two more knowledgeable canditates of Irish shooting groups to field the debate, one was out of the countery, the other,I dont know.So who was going to speak then??All in all Ithought the other callers just wanted to bash or support O'Dea,not discuss gun saftey or related.
Fridays show just went to Limerick fueding and Roy[major yawn to me]Keane.
All in all folks a tempest in a tae cup.

BTW if anyone knows this RFd would they PM me.I just want to know who he is.Maybe he has got a good reason to have ilegal weapons?Could have maybe a movie prop firearms liscense?

He is an RFD and also does supply weapons for film/tv etc. I think the main part of his business is now in the film/tv/theatre end of things but I believe he still has a dealers ticket as he might also need to supply blackpowder for older style muskets etc. Incidentally, just because you were contacted by Liveline does not make it compulsory for you to make any comment on any topic. All they can do is ask and as you are not a spokesperson for any shooting organisation, you could have politely declined their invitation without causing any difficulties for any of the shooting organisations.

Ah!I have now a very good idea who that is.Going by your PM to me[which I cant reply to you incidentially as you have a no return reply option switched on ,wether by accident or design]. I have met him or his brother, who is a stuntman I belive. You raised a few points that I would like to discuss privately with you.
Well, to state it again.I DID offer them the option to contact FLAG and NARGC,appently neither botherd to reply,or were contacted. And I am NOT a kind of person to leave everything to somone to do a job or to repersent me.
How many people did ring in with a pro gun view??If we were all concerned the switchboard should have jammed with pro people.Plus I have done at least a dozen interviews on radio,TV and out foriegn,so I might be a tad aware of what I am doing.Unlike that poor sod from Kilkenny.
If we keep running away from a challenge and want all our organisations to do all the talking for us.We will never get anywhere. The antis JUMP on any such opportunity,we should never be afraid of doing this either. It isnt that difficult to actually do,once you get over the butterflies. If you dont want to do t,pass it on.I also asked anyone with any suggestions to contact me,before the show went on air.No one did.

If we want all our organisations to do our gabbing for us.Then as Sparks said our organisations should be well known to the media and they should have a PR branch to deal with media quieries.Take it up with your organisations as to why they didnt respond.Des I know was in Brussles apprently. It would save me having to waste my time waiting around half a day for a phone call, when I could be doing somthing worthwhile with my time. But it seems to be the option here, sit back and critize, how the cat was belled, but dont do the cat belling yourself.
I might also ask what"difficulties"did I,or anyone cause for the shooting organisations,or how did I or anyone else increase the hysteria about this issue?Thing was dead news by Saturday. With a comment from O Dea on the Sunday Indo, and not much else AFIK

Can anyone tell me how far into the show the item was?
I don't really fancy sitting through two hours of The Plank waiting for this bit.

Saw it last night, angle was more about "these are the guns the criminals are using" & "this is the type of stuff that is being smuggled in from abroad with the drugs" rather than tying back in to the responsible shooting community, so all in all I reckon it was pretty harmless.

Thought it was interesting how few of Joe Public in the audience wanted to see "more visible" armed Garda presence. But who could blame them - Ever been to Belfast in the times of troubles and seen security on every corner, training a gun on you? That said, it was a gentle reminder that the majority of the public don't like guns- period.

Pat the Plank was quick enough to pick up & handle the weapons (with his finger on the trigger! ) I actually thought there was a secret glint in Pat's eye when the RFD was cocking the pump action!
