Environment Variables and Java

    Hopefully this isn't too hard a problem to solve. Every time I open up a command prompt to compile a java program, I have to type into the command line the following,

    set path=%PATH%;c:\jdk1.3.1\bin

    Now i know there is something you can do with environment variables but not entirely certain what to do. Been messing around with them a bit but no success. Any help with this would be appreciated. I'm using Windows XP.
