I'd initially plumped for an equity based one when they came out and BOI screwed up my application and claimed they never got it. So I ended up getting in at the very last minute with an equity based one. Hurrah! :)

Well considering that most people started their equity based investment during a recession, it's not much of a surprise that when they take their money out, after the recession has ended, that it will be worth a lot more than some deposit based account.
The only reason I went for an equity based one was because of the recession, hence most if not all stocks and shares were relatively underpriced:D

Of course because it's a regular savings plan as opposed to a lump sum, and as the prices of stocks and shares increase as you moved out of the recession in 2002/2003 onwards, I did run the risk that I would be paying relatively high prices for stocks and shares in my last year or two in the plan, but it was worth the chance!
