I suppose I did partly answer with 3rd highest daily mean for May.

But you do highlight how windy the 18th May was. Dublin AP had a mean of 25mph for the whole day. Shannon AP 29mph. I have no stats on daily means, but they are high for time of year and yet max gusts generally in the region of 50mph are not really noteworthy.

In a 24hr peroid from first drop yesterday at 17:30,
39.6mm of rain fell, which is my highest 24hr spell total to date.
And also from midnight (when totals reset) 33.8mm is my highest total from midnight to midnight.Seems like rain has finally cleared so safe to post total for the day.Edit if need.

During the 7 day period, 13th-19th June, I recorded 3.3hrs sunshine. Outside of winter, this is the lowest 7 day sunshine total I've recorded, though I've only been recording 2 1/2 years. 2 periods have had less. 7 days to 10th Jan 06 2.1hrs, and the 8 day period 31st Jan to 7th Feb 06 had no sunshine.

Knock 0.4hrs and Mullingar 0.9hrs, Clones 2.6hrs faired even worse :(

This comes after the previous 7 days had 95.5hrs, just one hour short of my 7day record.

Before this week, the lowest summer 7 day total was more than 20hrs.

Yesterday's low [28/06/07]: 2.4 ºC at Katesbridge, County Down.

    http://www.metoffice.gov.uk/weather/uk/ni/ni_latest_weather.html (accessed 29/06/07)

Very low for June, almost July - what's the coldest ever, does anyone know?

I hadn't got round to mentioning. I'd an official 2.2C yesterday morn, my lowest Summer temp on record (1999). Previous lowest 3.3C.

There have been sub zero in June, though they are few and far between. Min of about 2C occur most years, but would usually occur early in month.

As for July, one has to go back to 1971 to find a min lower than 2C at a synoptic station. Typically the lowest July min is about 4C

I ended up (providing none before 09z tomorrow) with 108.3mm. Wettest month of year and wettest July on record. 78mm in 2005 was previous highest.
Perhaps the most remarkable stat is 24 "raindays" (days with 0.2mm and more). This is 2nd highest (on it own) number in my records (since 1999) for any month. Only Nov 2002 with 26 raindays has had more. Nov 2002 was my wettest month on record with 225mm.

As with June, it was first time recording more than 100mm, and the rain in June and July have already made it my wettest Summer on record with a whole month to go.

Certainly other much longer term stations have had record high rainfall for July.
Casement 152mm, previous highest 106mm in 1974, station opened in 1964.
Kilkenny 122mm wettest since 1960. Only one other july since 1960 above 100mm
    Mullingar 154mm wettest since 1960.
    Clones 135mm wettest since 1988

Finally, I mentioned it is my wettest summer on record, but with only a few years of reacord, its meaningless. BUT, Casement has already recorded its 2nd wettest Summer on record, a station that opened in 1964.
June and July have seen 282mm recorded. The summer of 1988 saw 312mm. So 30mm needed during August to beat record. Not much more than a heavy shower!

I think Evelyn said in the 9PM forecast tonight that Phoenix Park recorded 297mm in June/July which is the largest amount in its 170 year old records!

Met Eireann Monthly Summary for July is out, though at midday its not on website yet.

Malin head had sunniest July since 1955!

I mentioned my 24 "raindays". This is not a patch compared with some stations.
At least 1mm or rain was measured on each day at one or more stations in the period between June 11th and July 29th- a total of 49 days.
    The stations aren't mentioned

I think by that they don't mean that there was 1mm of rain at 1 or more particular stations but that no day passed in that 49 day period that 1mm didn't fall in at least 1 of them?
It's just that I remember Ms cusack iirc mentioning that on day 40 or so.

We had a comparatively dryer july by all accounts here-wetter than usual and with some rain on most days/nights-just not as much as other parts.
You'd know it too travelling the land.

In June i recorded 105.1mm (33.8mm fell from a one day event on the 3rd)
July 108mm fell and mostly in shower events.
Both are records for here and with 45 days out of 61 when rain was recorded and 37 days when rain exceeded 1mm.

That makes total sense and is obviously correct :)

With 34mm during past 24hrs at Casement,
It is now wettest summer on record there.

17.5C at Kilkenny, highest Nov temp on record (1956)
16.9C at Clones possibly a station record, but certainly highest for 50 years.

18.2C at Ashford Co. Wicklow, highest on record, but only recording since 1999)

In the Nov summary available via link in previous message.

Its mentions that Malin Head saw only *15 hours* of sunshine during the month of November.

That really is very little. It was the dullest Nov on record there, records back to 1915

7th Feb 2008, 15.5C at Shannon Airport is highest on record for February.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 6,498 ✭✭✭Mothman

    13th Feb
    15.9C Kilkenny
    15.1C Belmullet

Both station records going back to mif 50s.

15.6C at Valentia is highest Feb temp there since 1960.

With the min of -2.0C at Kilkenny, the diurnal range is 17.9C

  • Registered Users Posts: 8,913 ✭✭✭Danno

12.5c max here today - 15.9 in Kilkenny 16 miles south. That is a fair difference over the relatively short distance. -2.2c here last night.
Is the City heat island having an effect on the station there that much? If so, then no wonder they are moving it.

I promise not to clutter up this thread with foreign weather reports, but on this one occasion, I must report that there was a thunderstorm with snow here on the west coast of Canada last night and we had 4 cms on the ground this morning. It has since melted except in the shade. This is about as rare as the same thing happening in let's say Cork or Tralee, I would think.

So the weather is rather out of whack everywhere at the moment, it seems.

Just noticed in Met Eireann's Monthly Weather Bulletin for Jan 2008 that the min temp at Rosslare was -2.6C. This was lower than the min recorded at Kilkenny, -2.0C.

A lower monthly min at Rosslare compared to Kilkenny happened on only one other month.
    July 1964.

And I'll add that there were 10 air frosts at kilkenny and 2 at Rosslare.

Just been looking at met.ie and it appears as though Casement has now exceeded its normal annual total (annual mean - 711.2; this year to yesterday - 712.7).

    October 29th 2008

Frontal snow causing snow covering in many Wicklow upland areas above circa 200M. 2.5cm at my location.

Max temp today of 4.4c here.

  • Registered Users Posts: 5,033 ✭✭✭Snowbie

On the wireless earlier, -4C was October's lowest recorded temp in Ireland since 1934.

It didn't say where this was recorded the other night though (29th)

Don't believe everything you hear or read.
-5.5C at Fermoy Co. Cork, 24th Oct 2003.

Plenty other -5C through the years.
    -6.0C in 93
    -5.5C in 92

BTW, the -1.3C on the evening of 28th at Dublin AP may well have been lowest on record there in Oct.
