Ipaq pcmcia jacket problem

The jacket is recognised by 3970 and a GPS jacket works. The battery works too. But it won't recognise pcmcia cards. I've tried a compact flash memory card in the pcmcia sleeve and AFAIK it shouldn't need a driver for it but still comes up with "unknown card in socket 1"
