Start off with AVG anti-virus (free). Then Ad-aware, then spybot. If things are still not clearing up, download CWShredder.

Perform these steps in this order and you should be fine.

do you have a firewall installed?, by that I mean other than the WinXP one which is very basic.
If not download and install ZoneAlarm, I've found the number of infections to be greatly reduced since I installed it, prevention is better than cure and all that ;)
You can get it here for free http://www.download.com/3000-2092-10039884.html . You'll find initially that each time you try to open a new application that monitiors keystrokes, accesses the web etc that zonealarm hasn't seen before such as IE/Firefox, a game or a word doc from a webpage you'll get a zonealarm warning asking to you want to allow or deny access. Only ever allow permanent access when you're sure what program is asking. You'll also find a load of legit companies try to access the web after installation, generally for registration, check for updates etc, normally I deny the lot of them and check for updates only when I want to, cuts down on the number of apps trying to access your bandwidth significantly.
There's other free one's out there but just recommending the one I use from experience.
